U.S. consumers looking to get Nissan's all-electric Leaf will have to wait another year, after dealers sold this year's entire shipment before the zippy sedan even hit showrooms, the Japanese automaker said Monday.
Nissan dealers have collected more than 20,000 orders for the Leaf, and the bulk are wealthy "early adapters" on the West Coast of the United States, said Carlos Tavares, chair of Nissan's management committee for the Americas.
The UK government last week made a rare exception to its spending review process, otherwise scheduled to conclude in October, by confirming grants for the purchase of electric cars would go ahead.
The grants contribute 25 per cent towards the purchase of battery electric cars or plug-in hybrids, up to a maximum of £5,000 per car. In total £43m has been allocated – sufficient for an initial 8,600 cars – starting in January 2011 and running until the end of March 2012, with a review slated for January 2012.
During our test drive of Nissan’s all-electric LEAF this week (video clip) Nissan’s Director of Product Planing for North America, Mark Perry, told us that the car giant is working with AT&T to provide a connection for digital services for the car, like battery charge monitoring and being able to find the nearest charging station. There is a carrier signal that is actually transmitting the information up to a satellite and then to Nissan’s data centers said Perry, who also confirmed with us that the cars will use AT&T’s cellular network for that connection.
Enterprise Rent-A-Car today announced the first phase of its plans to offer electric vehicles (EVs) at select offices throughout its neighborhood network of more than 5,000 U.S. locations. Delivery of 500 Nissan LEAFs will begin in January 2011 and will continue throughout the year. In addition to the LEAFs, the company will offer customers electric vehicles from other manufacturers as they become available
Few people are fooled by Nissan’s claim that the LEAF is a zero emissions vehicle. Zero tailpipe emissions does not mean zero emissions. “Electric vehicles just shift emissions from the tailpipe to the smokestack,” many critics claim. Both of these claims oversimplify the issue and do not accurately reflect the potential impact of electric vehicles on greenhouse gas emissions.

The new Nissan Leaf will feature an audible whistle that alerts pedestrians of its presence. This week, Nissan has also invited 500 people, including customers that have signed up to buy the vehicle, to test drive the Leaf in Japan where they’ll be able to experience the Leaf’s “approaching vehicle sound” first hand.
According to Nissan, the sound transmits over a range of frequencies to ensure it can be heard by as many people as possible. The pitch will also vary depending on whether the Leaf is accelerating or decelerating.

Nissan is planning for a production capacity of 500,000 Leaf electric cars in North America, Japan and Europe by 2012, the Chicago Tribune reported.
So Tabata and his team consulted Japanese film score composers, and eventually settled on a sound reminiscent of the flying cars in the sci-fi noir film Blade Runner.
