If the bottled water industry continues to grow at the rate it has enjoyed the past decade, water fountains may become the new pay phones.  Walk through an airport concourse or public park and most water fountains stand unused.  Why would future new or retrofitted buildings include features, like water fountains that will only be ignored?  Cities that have perfectly fine drinking water, including Seoul and Amsterdam, have few drinking fountains in sight, and this could become true in American cities, too, if bottling companies have their way.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently announced that BMW’s hotly anticipated Mini-E will soon be hitting the streets of NYC! This April BMW will loan the city ten fully-electric Mini Coopers to participate in New York’s “Street Condition Observation Unit” (SCOUT), which scours city streets for road damage, graffiti, and other instances where infrastructure repair is needed. The zippy zero-emission vehicles will lend the program their lightweight carbon footprint in exchange for an extensive round of road testing.

New York City has installed a new-and-improved aluminum alloy turbine in the East River, the only of its kind in the United States.

The turbine is the first of 300 which the city hopes to install in the waterway. Unlike the typical river which flows in a constant direction, the East River is a tidal straight with strong, fluctuating currents which allow for more efficient power generation. Once in place, the system could provide electricity to 10,000 households.
