Apple has filed patents for a device that could be used for energy management.
The patents, first reported by Patently Apple, is essentially a device that links outlets into homes via power line networking. With this, every outlet in your home into an Internet port.
Several companies are already moving into home automation--Google, Microsoft, Intel, Cisco and a host of start-ups. But Apple can bring a bit of star power to it.
Intel has unveiled its latest Home Automation System that runs on the company’s energy-efficient Atom processor and features a large 11” touch-sensitive OLED display. The OLED panel is expected to be developed by Sony.
Speaking at The Networked Grid conference Erfan Ibrahim — who heads EPRI’s work on communications, systems management and cyber security for the smart grid — dished out a sort of grab bag of opinions on a range of hot smart grid topics. Here are five myths, misunderstandings and truths he raised about how the smart grid should be rolled out...

For the last six months, IBM has been testing a pilot project in Fayetteville, North Carolina, that aimed to find out what kind of energy savings could be realized by utilizing the smart grid and implementing simple habit changes. Yesterday they revealed the results so far, and found that the project showed an average of 15% energy savings at homes and businesses, and as much as a 40% savings in some homes.
