Why Kindle Should Be An Open Book - Forbes.com
"Unless Amazon embraces open e-book standards like epub, which allow readers to read books on a variety of devices, the Kindle will be gone within two or three years."
The march of the Kindle | Well read | The Economist
Questo è il vero punto forte di Kindle, e degli e-readers!
"In many ways, this is true. The Kindle is an unusual gadget in that it does not obviously target young people, or early-adopting technophiles. Instead it appeals to passionate readers, who want no fiddling with cables (the Kindle works without a computer) or complicated pricing plans (Kindle users pay to buy books and other content, but do not have to pay wireless-subscription fees). It is, in short, perfect for older people. The Kindle is a surprisingly “conservative” device, says John Makinson, the boss of Penguin Group, a large book publisher, so it is an additional distribution channel and thus “good for us”. (Penguin is an arm of Pearson, which partly owns The Economist.)"

Reading is Hot - Floyd Norris Blog - NYTimes.com
Somehow I find this reassuring, both about the economy and the buyers. In contrast to the pictures of desperate buyers seeking bargains in the pre-dawn hours of Friday, this is a device that is of use only to someone who reads a significant amount. (The books are often cheaper than the printed ones, but this is a purchase — at $359 — that makes no sense if you don’t read a fair number of books.)

Bezos Interview on Kindle and other Amazon Ventures - MobileRead Forums
"Bezos: We humans evolve with our tools—they change us. But our network-connected tools have not kept pace with everything we need. The tools we've been building the past couple of decades make information snacking more convenient—I like my BlackBerry; it's good for e-mail and chunks of text. But you don't want to read a 300-page novel from a laptop. It's not comfortable. The Kindle was built for long-form reading.
SM: So as the Internet shortens our attention span, you think the Kindle will lengthen it?
Bezos: Yes, I think people will read more, not less."

giornali internet crisi editoria libri amazon kindle | The Marketer 2.0
"Qui in Italia la digitalizzazione dei libri scolastici genera ancora accese discussioni - libro di carta sì libro di carta no - (...) tutto questo mentre Amazon procedete spedita con il suo Kindle. Amazon ha, infatti, capito benissimo che i libri di carta faranno la fine dei giornali e che non ci sono corporazioni o luddisti che tengano."
