Obama's Inaugural Address: Full Text - TIME
"For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non–believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth."

Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends — hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism — these things are old.

DRM still sucks: Yahoo Music going dark, taking keys with it

The bad dream of DRM continues. Yahoo e-mailed its Yahoo! Music Store customers yesterday, telling them it will be closing for good—and the company will take its DRM license key servers offline on September 30, 2008. Sure, it's bad news and yet another example of the sheer lobotomized brain-deadness that has characterized music DRM, but the reaction of most music fans will be: "Yahoo had an online music store?"
-
Once the Yahoo store goes down and the key servers go offline, existing tracks cannot be authorized to play on new computers. Instead, Yahoo recommends the old, lame, and lossy workaround of burning the files to CD, then reripping them onto the computer. Sure, you'll lose a bunch of blank CDs, sound quality, and all the metadata, but that's a small price to pay for the privilege of being able to listen to that music you lawfully acquired. Good thing you didn't download it illegally or just buy it on CD!
Booming e-book sales to drive display demand, iSuppli says
-
Worldwide e-book display shipments will rise to 18.3 million units in 2012, increasing at a remarkable 161% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 150,000 units in 2007, iSuppli predicts. Global e-book display revenue is forecast to reach US$291.2 million by 2012, rising at a CAGR of 143% from US$3.5 million in 2007.
-
Amazon's Kindle has proven there is a viable market for e-books with shipments expected to reach 1 million units in 2008, according to iSuppli.

Edge Perspectives with John Hagel: Shift Happens – The Future of Advertising
"is there any Web 2.0 start-up that doesn’t blithely answer “advertising” when asked about their revenue model?".
E' proprio questo, a tutt'oggi, a costituire il punto debole - e la potenziale "bolla" - di tutto il web 2.0. O si trovano risposte alternative (qualcosa c'è già in giro) o altrimenti scoppia.

The basic paradox of the Internet can be framed very simply: The very platform that makes advertising both more relevant and more measurable is the same platform that longer-term will challenge and ultimately undermine the basic role of advertising in communicating with customers.
-
People want to connect with vendors, especially vendors that can address unmet needs, but they will increasingly want to do it on their terms.
-
The focus shifts to becoming more helpful by creating rich, serendipitous environments that people will actively seek out
-
- help amplify attention through more effective advice/recommendations
- foster and protect reputation
- help amplify talent development through rich learning environments
So, where’s the money? Here’s my answer: to find the money, seek out scarcity. Abundance in some areas inevitably creates scarcity in others. Attention, reputation and talent become relatively scarce in economies of abundance. Businesses will be well positioned to charge for their services if they can deliver one or more of the following values:

It's for women and women
are buying it. -
I realized that most of
the books I bought I didn't use any more (thanks to wikipedia and
google) and that buying books in anticipation of giving them to someone
else was generous but not actually happening in practice. For the tiny
slice of readers that account for a huge pile of book sales (300 books
a year adds up), moving those purchases to the Kindle is smart for
Amazon and smart for the reader. -
Here are three simple examples
of how non-fiction books on the Kindle could be better, not just
cheaper and thinner:--Let me see the best parts of the book as highlighted by thousands of other readers.
--Let me see notes in the margin as voted up, Digg-style, by thousands of other readers.
--Let me interact with hyperlinks and smart connections not just within the book but across books -
The funny thing is: I've heard from a few publishers about my comment about pricing, and they've pointed out that authors would be hurt if the price was lowered, because, they argue, the royalties would go down. This is nuts, of course, because volume would go up, and the author percentage rate would go up as well (no paper costs to pay for). The power stays with the author, because the author is not a commodity.
-
What happens to reading habits when you can buy all the books you
want for $40 a month? What happens to book consumption when books
become social objects, commented upon by you and your participating
friends or network?

95% and more of music on iPods isn’t bought through iTunes. It’s downloaded, shared, ripped, bootlegged, remixed, reformatted, torrented and then some. I’m not truly concerned with the ethics of it all - I care about the realities of the marketplace.
-
what has held the digital book back are essentially two issues: the backlit display, which makes it hard to read long documents on the computer for entertainment (at least for mainstream folks who don’t sleep with their MacBook), and the inability of e-ink device manufacturers to allow internet access and open/standard dispaly formats on their devices, since those threatened the publishing crowd.
-
a potentially huge opportunity for someone to start serious free distribution of e-books for the Kindle (something pretty close to what Songbird* is vs iTunes today). Be the part of iTunes that’s always been about free - whether it’s ripping, sharing or organizing legal as well as pirated content.
-
Essentially the idea is to take all the libraries of text content out there and reformat them for easy access on the Kindle.Add Sticky Note
- And not just the Kindle, but the Sony, Cybook and the iLiad, and all coming e-ink readers and whatever device you - as the actual reading person - want and fell comfortable with!posted by tombolini on 2008-06-16
-
Become the Napster of the book world - the LimeWire for text. Let young authors come to you to publish free and gain distribution, i.e. MP3.com. Let old authors pale in shame at the download numbers of classics on your platform compared to their latest and greatest “bestseller”, i.e. open access scientific publishing model. Let the social decide what rises to the top over time (instead of the book publishing world casting couches - believe me, they do exist, pasty skin, flush cheeks, nerdy glasses and all!), i.e. Aime Street. Of course, I wouldn’t implement the whole thing as a client app but rather make it a free online service, accessible and readable from any device, with upload/download API and a serious developer platform strategy.
-
I firmly believe the Kindle in its second and third gen will make the e-book as mainstream as MP3s are now.
-
Free books can be as big as free music given proliferation of readers.
