Free Technology for Teachers: 10 Things Teachers Should Know Before 1:1
I was on a conference call this evening with some other educators and administrators in the state of Maine. The purpose of the call was to brainstorm ideas for a video about preparing for teaching in a 1:1 computing environment. In advance of the call we were asked to generate a list of things that teachers should know before teaching in a 1:1 environment.

Derek's Blog » 1-1 Computing, does it work?
On the one hand I can see significant benefits in each student having their own computer - although many of the initial arguments for this are up for scrutiny in an age of cloud computing and where a range of devices can be used to connect to the cloud, not just a laptop.\n\nOn the other hand, my observations of what happens in many 1-1 computing environments is that the full benefit of the computer in the context of classroom learning is seldom fully realised because there is little or no change in the basic pedagogy, and so the computer ends up becoming a substitute for the exercise book or reference book in a traditional pedagogical approach.
But Does it Work?
This eBook explores what we are learning from local, state-level and national research into the impact of one-to-one computing on students, teachers and schools. To what degree are these ambitious programs living up to their promise? How can they be improved? And how do we build evaluation into all our endeavors going forward so that we maximize results and improve understanding about what works and what doesn't when it comes to education and technology?

It's easy to say that technology is just a tool or that the technology needs to be invisible, but actually making that happen is harder than just saying it.
Learning and Instructional ... - Google Book Search
Learning and Instructional Technologies for the 21st Century gathers research which identify models and approaches to improve learning through the inclusion of technology. These papers, from leading researchers and thinkers in instructional technology, begin by refuting the idea that education can be improved through more or better technology. Instead, the contributors emphasize specific, research-based ideas, which re-evaluate learning, reorganize schools, redirect technology, and provide instruction.
Seeing No Progress, Some Schools Drop Laptops - New York Times
So the Liverpool Central School District, just outside Syracuse, has decided to phase out laptops starting this fall, joining a handful of other schools around the country that adopted one-to-one computing programs and are now abandoning them as educationally empty — and worse.
Winnie Hu wrote this to spread fear. She does not understand how to teach and learn with technology and this makes her uncomfortable. Her fear produces this reaffirming see-I-told-you-technology-is-bad article.
Top News - School laptop debate heats up
According to the WSJ article, some parents and technology experts are part of a growing opposition to one-to-one programs. Only a few years ago, the article states, these programs were introduced to schools across the county, often amid great fanfare and with encouragement from large computer manufacturers such as Apple and Dell. But now, the article says, some parents and educators are having second thoughts over the programs' higher-than-anticipated costs and the potential for students to use the technology inappropriately.

Have Laptops Flunked the Test? (Gotham Gazette, May 2007)
There is little evidence that students who use laptops in class do better on standardized tests than students who do not.

One letter writer to the Times
pointed out that maintenance is a greater problem with Windows machines than
Apple products. But regardless of the type of computer, students use them to
access educationally trivial (and sometimes pornographic) web sites. -
The goal of laptop learning,
they say, is not to improve standardized test scores, but rather to capture
the imagination of students as they work on projects that would either be impossible
or much more difficult without a computer. - 1 more annotations...
