Yammer : Enterprise Microblogging
a private micro-blogging service. If you like the idea of Twitter but are concerned about the updates being public, then Yammer provides the same functionality as Twitter, but for in-company use. Only individuals with the same email domain can join a given network. In addition to microblogging there are discussion boards and users can form/join groups. There are also Yammer iPhone app and Blackberry clients.
The Year of Edmodo
Edmodo, a micro-blogging platform for teachers and students, is often described as “what Twitter would be like if it had been designed by a teacher”. I think there is more to it than that, I think Edmodo, with its clean design and its spot-on educational oriented functionality, is what Twitter would be like if it had been designed by students for students.

Applications for Education
I've mentioned in the past that Twitter can be good for getting instant feedback and taking informal surveys of a class. The problem with using Twitter is it's too public for some school settings. Present.ly provides a free place to get the same type of feedback as you'd gather on Twitter, but in a closed setting.

It would have looked like Edmodo. I just discovered Edmodo yesterday, somewhat ironically via Twitter. Like Twitter, it’s a microblogging site, but it builds in significant additional functionality to support classroom interactions.
