Scavenger Hunt Tutorial

A scavenger hunt usually involves either students visiting web sites selected by the teacher or having students look for web sites using search strategies. Sometimes a scavenger hunt is specifically designed to introduce students to search engines to become more proficient with finding information on the web. They also can be specifically set up to integrate Internet information with certain content areas.

Characteristics of Scavenger Hunts:

*

Educational and fun
*

Often designed around a curricular theme
*

Made up of questions - students use Internet to find answers
*

Some hunts provide the links to help students find answers
*

Other hunts depend on students using search engines to fin answers
*

Can be played in teams, as a class, or individually
*

Can be played during a certain time frame or used in contest form
*

Can be used to review for tests
*

Many students find these hunts motivational
*

Can use already created hunts
*

Teacher can design his/her own hunt so that it specifically addresses your own curricular topic (and that will meet objectives on state standards)

OPEN Forum by American Express OPEN | The Art of the Tutorial

This week I sat through eight hours of companies pitching themselves to a panel of experts at SXSW. It was a challenging experience because the companies had two minutes to explain what they do, and very few could. Indeed, in most cases the first question that the panelists asked was, “What exactly do you do again?” The same thing happens hundreds of thousands of times every day as people visit company websites. How many websites pass this simple test: “People can understand what the company does in two minutes or less”?

About a year ago I stumbled upon a website called Start Cooking. It’s method of showing how to prepare food blew me away in terms of effectiveness, speed, and simplicity. I ended up doing an episode with it featuring my world-famous chicken teriyaki:
