Dr. Vickie Mike, foreign language teacher at Horseheads High School, is the 2009 New York State Teacher of the Year. The Horseheads High School graduate has been a teacher for more than 30 years. She began her teaching career in the Rochester and Buffalo areas. In 1980 she returned to Horseheads and is in her 29th year with the Horseheads Central School District this year.
In addition to teaching, she is the district's department chairperson for Languages Other than English. Mike has received several honors during her teaching career. She has been the recipient of a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Humanities Award, the Horseheads National Honor Society Teacher of the Year, and the Twin Tiers Outstanding Educator Award. Most recently, in October of 2007, she was invited to participate as a Delegate of World Language Educators Symposium in China.
In addition to teaching Spanish, Mike is actively involved in professional development institutes and workshops for teachers. She has presented many workshops on curriculum, instruction, assessment, and technology for teachers. She is dedicated to preparing students and teachers to be global citizens who embrace lifelong learning.

Theme: Critical Literacy: Opening Words and Worlds to English Language Learners
We are looking for your input for our 39th Annual Conference! Our theme is Critical Literacy: Opening Words and Worlds to English Language Learners, and all are welcome to submit proposals for presentations on this theme and instructional practice, however proposals with or without critical literacy as the focus will be considered.

Educational Leadership:Literacy 2.0:Are Digital Media Changing Language?
Are instant messaging and text messaging killing language? To hear what the popular media say, a handful of OMGs (oh my god) and smiley faces, along with a paucity of capital letters and punctuation marks, might be bringing English to its knees.
Although journalists tend to sensationalize the linguistic strangeness of "online lingo," quantitative analyses of instant messaging conversations and text messages reveal that abbreviations, acronyms, and even misspellings are comparatively infrequent, at least among college-age students. For example, in a study I did of college students' instant messaging conversations, out of 11,718 words, only 31 were "online lingo" abbreviations, and only 90 were acronyms (of which 76 were LOL). In a study of college students' text messaging, my colleague Rich Ling and I found a few more lexical shortenings; yet the grand total of clear abbreviations was only 47 out of 1,473 words, which is hardly overwhelming.
Yes, young people sometimes accidentally slip a btw (by the way) into a school essay. But a recent study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project confirms that middle school and high school students understand what kind of language is appropriate in what context (Lenhart, Smith, & Macgill, 2008). What's more, scholars of new media language, such as David Crystal and Beverly Plester, remind us that the new technologies encourage creativity, which can spill over into school writing (Crystal, 2008; Plester, Wood, & Bell, 2008).
