Poll: Carolinians favor conservation over power plants - Charlotte Business Journal:

A growing number of Carolinians say rising demand for electricity can be met through conservation rather than by building more power plants.

That’s a key finding of a new poll commissioned by Duke Energy Carolinas. And it reflects a distinct shift in public opinion from two years ago.

In the latest poll, 43% of the 1,100 N.C. and S.C. residents surveyed say “people and companies will learn to conserve energy and use significantly less electricity.” Only 30% say “government will give permission for more power plants to be built.”

Living with nuclear power: public views not as simple as we thought on Environmental Expert

A UK study provides the first contemporary investigation of public perceptions of nuclear power among residents living close to existing nuclear plants. It indicates that responses are not simply 'for' or 'against', but a complex 'landscape of beliefs' that will need complex communication from authorities about plans for new plants.

Climate change and energy supply concerns have put nuclear power back on the policy agenda. For example, recent UK government policy proposes that new nuclear power stations should form part of the future UK energy mix(1). As in other countries, many of the candidate sites are those that have existing nuclear facilities.

The study examined local response to nuclear power in two UK locations near power stations: Oldbury and Bradwell-on-Sea. It used a technique where participants sorted statements on nuclear power according to how the statements reflect their point of view.

The analysis indicated that there are four different 'points of view':

* Beneficial and safe. A belief that nuclear power brings both local and global benefits and the power station workers are trustworthy.
* Threat and distrust. Nuclear power is unsafe and the government and the nuclear industry are not trustworthy.
* Reluctant acceptance. Nuclear power is 'the best of a bad lot'.
* There's no point worrying. An indifference to nuclear power and a belief that it is out of our control
* These four unique points of view were found at both locations, indicating the results are likely to be reflected in other communities, at least in the UK. Most participants in the study held the first two views.

Survey: Americans split over nuclear energy | Frank Munger's Atomic City Underground | knoxnews.com

A national poll of 800 residents conducted by the Polling Institute at Sacred Heart University found a pretty even split between those who think nuclear energy is very safe or somewhat safe (46.1 percent) and those who think it's very dangerous or somewhat dangerous (44.7 percent)..

According to info distributed to the news media, Sacred Heart (based in Fairfield, Conn.) institute's poll found that a majority see nuclear waste as a danger, while they viewed wind as being the safest energy source. Also, about a third of the respondents thought that an increase in nuclear energy would lead to more nuclear weapons.

Most of the polled indivdiuals supported the EPA's designation of CO2 as a public health threat.

In a statement, Dr. Josh Klein, assistant professor in Sacred Heart's Department of Criminal Justice, said, "Americans are split about whether nuclear power is safe or not, and many people have specific security concerns about nuclear power. The two dangers that concern a majority of Americans are the problems with radioactive waste storage, a top criticism of nuclear power, and possible plant meltdowns.''

Most Chileans Oppose Nuclear Energy: Angus Reid Global Monitor

The majority of Chileans are not keen on developing nuclear energy but a significant proportion is, according to a poll by Ipsos. 52.5 per cent of respondents disagree with building nuclear power plants on Chilean soil, while 40.4 per cent agree.

Michelle Bachelet—a former defence minister—was elected in a January 2006 run-off as the candidate for the centre-left Agreement of Parties for Democracy (CPD) with 53.49 per cent of all cast ballots. She officially took over as president in March 2006.

In April 2008, a group of 23 environmental organizations withdrew its unconditional support for Bachelet’s government, saying the president broke a pact signed in 2005 which included a pledge to never consider developing nuclear energy in Chile.

Most Israelis could live with a nuclear Iran: poll | International | Reuters

Only one in five Israeli Jews believes a nuclear-armed Iran would try to destroy Israel and most see life continuing as normal should their arch-foe get the bomb, an opinion poll published on Sunday found.

The survey, commissioned by a Tel Aviv University think tank, appeared to challenge the argument of successive Israeli governments that Iran must be denied the means to make atomic weapons lest it threaten the existence of the Jewish state.

Pro-Con | Should the U.S. increase its nuclear power capacity to combat the threat of global warming? - Kansas City Star

The nuclear industry provides just 19.7 percent of America’s electrical power, a remarkably small share for a country with our industrial capacity and energy needs. There were 112 reactors operating in the United States in 1990. Today, there are just over 100.

There are signs that America’s nuclear Dark Age is ending. Some former critics of nuclear power embrace it as an alternative to fossil fuels. Plus, the political winds may be shifting. The Bush administration promoted nuclear power, opening the way to 22 nuclear plant applications for the period 2007-2010. President Barack Obama acknowledges that nuclear power should be “part of the energy mix.”

U.S. Wind Industry Finds Support for Clean Energy Future

A new public opinion poll shows strong bipartisan support for a national Renewable Energy Standard requiring utilities to generate at least 25 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources by 2025.

The poll was released Tuesday as the wind energy industry gathered in the Windy City for the American Wind Energy Association's WINDPOWER 2009 Conference and Exhibition. For these 18,000 attendees and 1,200 exhibitors renewable energy means wind.

The Associated Press: Pro- or anti-nuke? Depends how you ask

Americans' support for nuclear power skidded in polling after the Three Mile Island accident 30 years ago and slipped more after the Chernobyl disaster seven years later. In more recent years, nuclear power has regained popularity, but the level of support depends greatly on survey question wording.

In more than 40 surveys from 1977 through 1990, Cambridge Reports National asked Americans about building more nuclear power plants as a way of "dealing with the energy crisis" and found a high of 58 percent favored it in the first poll.

NRC - NRC Publishes Survey Results on Nuclear Accident Response Strategies to Protect the Public

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission released today a publication that provides new insights into how best to protect the public during a nuclear power plant accident. The publication is based on the results of focus groups and telephone surveys conducted in the Emergency Planning Zones (EPZs) around reactor sites. The data will help the NRC review its regulations and guidance related to emergency preparedness and determine if changes need to be considered to existing protective action strategies.

Focus groups were used in 2007 to collect information that guided the development of the phone survey. The phone survey was administered in 2008 by Sandia National Laboratories, under contract to the NRC, to approximately 2,500 households randomly selected in order to obtain 800 completed, anonymous surveys.

TMI poll irrelevant - The York Daily Record

Since when is nuclear an "alternative energy source"?

Nuclear power has been around for decades. It's second only to coal for electricity production in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

And yet in its recent public survey, Three Mile Island repeatedly refers to nuclear power as an "alternative energy source."

TMI poll: 20 more years - The York Daily Record

A Three Mile Island-commissioned public-opinion poll that favors the continued operation of the plant will not influence a pending federal decision to renew the site's operating license for 20 more years.

"The poll means nothing to (the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission)," NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan said. "We don't base our decisions on polls that are put out by companies that operate plants."
