Eric Schmidt: Google Mission Is to 'Change the World' | Epicenter from Wired.com
a very important quote from google's CEO
"The goal of the company is not monetize anything. The goal is to change the world and monetization is a technique to do that."
After seeing an example of OLPC and Classmates(which is a very cheap laptop released by Intel.), I came to see that for-profit organization is much stronger and sounder than non-profit organizations. Even OLPC, which was started by a MIT professor and has gained a lot of popularity and momentum, has failed to do well because of a lot of issues sprung upon because of the fact that they are non-profit.
So many people might argue against a for-profit company talking about changing the world, what we need embrace is that only they can do that.

Where does Google go next? - May. 12, 2008
google is different from other companies in that it has the golden jackpot which infinitely generates money.
it's hiring practice may be one of the most important factors of the rapid growth of google. by filtering out less qualified candidates in the first place, google are able to keep its motivation and quality high all the time.
another factor is how they are doing management. it's just a guess but i guess that they are doing a lot of discussions based on state of the art studies on how they should react, so the possibility of their failing is quite lower compared to other companies which operate their business based more on the intuition of the CEOs than thorough researches and discussions.

Why Arrington is Wrong about Yahoo!-Google Deal - O'Reilly Radar
i agree that the existence of competitors are not always good for market though it's thought to be so in traditional economics. what's different about google from other normal companies is that they are naturally motivated to change the world and their incentives are not so much on money making, and that's why it'd be better off without competitors in this case.
and while google successfully dominated the internet realm, it's still a long way till they have the same presence in the mobile as they have in the internet, which means other players still have a lot of chance to succeed.
