H-P Throws More Cash at Scientists - Digits - WSJ

This year’s money, he says, will fund projects that relate to H-P’s existing businesses, but not necessarily in ways that will generate short-term profits. For example, Carnegie Mellon’s Noah Smith is getting a grant this year to study how “opinions are propagated through social communities” on political blogs, and “analyze how the vast amount of data can be leveraged for commerce, social advertisement and other commercial and statistical methods.”
New research: B2B buyers have very high social participation
Some highlights from this research (start by looking at the right two columns):
* 91% of these technology decision-makers were Spectators -- the highest number I've ever seen in a Social Technographics Profile. This means you can count on the fact that your buyers are reading blogs, watching user generated video, and participating in other social media. Note that 69% of them said they were using this technology for business purposes.
* Only 5% are non-participants (Inactives).
* 55% of these decision-makers were in social networks (Joiners) -- despite as mature businesspeople and not college students, you'd think they'd be participating a lot less.
* 43% are creating media (blogs, uploading videos or articles, etc.) and 58% are Critics, reacting to content they see in social formats. Again the numbers are very high compared to other groups we've surveyed, and again the level of participation for business purposes is also very high.
Networking site cashes in on friends - Telegraph
I think this is a very interesting move by Facebook. Access to a social networks data and users for market research is obvious IMO and probably a really good move. It makes me wonder about what the future of marketing will be. Will all social networks turn into marketing and research companies?

This is one are that Idaho needs to be aggressively investing in. Not only is there bottom line financial benefit, but ag, tech and everyone benefits. Especially if the money invested isn't just in infrastructure but research and development both in our colleges and the private sector.

Good friend of mine, fellow HP employee and fellow blogger Chris Hawkes offers some really good advice for small businesses doing their own market research over on the NYT Small Biz Bites Blog. Chris is the perfect guy to blog about Market research. He's been doing it for years for HP and before that was apart of US Military Intelegence (I know, save the oxymoron jokes).
I especially found the comments interesting. The Market Research Association doesn't suggest startups do their own research (imagine that), but as Chris rebuts, startups usually can't afford proffesional research and something is better than nothing.
