As Rupert Murdoch talks about how he wants to cut off Google, while claiming that aggregator sites are "parasites" and "stealing" from him -- and that fair use would likely be barred by the courts, it seemed like a good time to examine at least some of the sites that are owned by Rupert Murdoch that appear to aggregate content from other sites and which rely on the very same fair use argument.

TechCrunch columnist Paul Carr took to New York’s public radio station WNYC yesterday to discuss the pros and cons of citizen journalism in the context of breaking news. Carr was joined by host Brian Lehrer and journalist and academic Jeff Jarvis, a longtime advocate of citizen journalism.

The news room idea is one more and more companies are creating. I think where they are still falling down is on the ongoing content strategy. Corporate Journalism is going to be huge. The fall of the newspapers have left a huge need for companies and it's only going to get worse.

    I'm particularly excited about how ISC hired journalists to create their newsroom, something I’ve advocated for years. This is something I've called brand journalism and is an increasingly effective marketing tool. In fact, ISC has hired the skills of a print journalist, a television journalist, and a photojournalist.

To me the problem stems from people thinking that newspapers are synonymous with news, or journalism, or reporting. In my experience those three things are happening less and less at newspapers. Making it illegal to link to a newspaper would kill their business faster than anything else (IMO).

It's nice to see Journalism Schools recognize the importance of social media. Especially if they don't want to turn out unemployable students.

  • Many of my journalist friends give me a hard time about the hard time I tend to give journalism.  Chris has a great post about the difference between bloggers and journalist.  I think that this is especially important for PR folks to understand when engaging with bloggers.  They don't understand or care what an embargo is and there is no 'off the record'.  With bloggers you at least know where their biases are.  I think reporters try really hard to make people believe they are objective but usually aren't.  I also think that bloggers could learn something from journalists and try a little harder to check for acuracy.

    • Kara says she’s going all digital because she doesn’t want to kill any more trees, which although it’s an obvious rationale, is still striking to hear stated flatly by a long-time print journalist of Kara’s stature.

       

      But more striking still were Kara’s other reasons:

       
      • The future of media is all digital, she has concluded, and she doesn’t want to be left behind
      • She prefers digital journalism for all its advantages
  • I've always wondered what is stopping really talented journalists from going out on their own.  I've heard what "average" journalism wages are and I also know what a really engaging writer can make running their own blogs.

    I have to think that most journalists just aren't that adventurous.  Most of them don't strike me as entrepreneurs, although the ones that are could make a killing on their own.
