Why Every Company is a Media Company
Amen! I have been saying this for years. Whatever your company is you need to think about it like a publishing company. Maybe not from a business model but from the fact that you need to be publishing and distributing content. That is the new marketing.
Networking site cashes in on friends - Telegraph
I think this is a very interesting move by Facebook. Access to a social networks data and users for market research is obvious IMO and probably a really good move. It makes me wonder about what the future of marketing will be. Will all social networks turn into marketing and research companies?

Web Strategy (Advanced): Applying a Social Computing Strategy to the entire Product Lifecycle
This is an amazing post. I'm surprised this wasn't released as a Forrester report. Jeremiah sais that this is social media moving beyond marketing. IMHO this IS marketing. Product dev, support, research, are things that marketing has to be involved in and I'm willing to bet that org's that do all of this will have a marketing person in charge of it.
The Social Media Marketing Blog: Please, Sir, May I Have Some More (Budget)?
I personally think that the current recession will drive more marketing dollars online. Social media is cost effective and can have better ROI than traditional marketing.
KyleLacy.com » Blog Archive » The Philosophical Comparison Between Marketing and Social Media
Kyle talks about the simultaneous shift of social media and marketing from push to pull. He also makes the comarison that the pull goes both ways. Customers don't want marketing pushed on them they want to pull it to them. So instead of pushing your marketing create marketing that pulls your customers in.

Social Media is about being Tactically Strategic » Conversations Matter: Bridging the Social Media Gap
This is my most recent post on Conversations Matter. I firmly believe that there is a lack of marketing people (especially at large companies) that are Tactically Strategic. There are many people who are one or the other and I think this leads to the social media failures we see.

Is there any company that's not in the media business? The internet has turned all public and even non public content (Gmail) into media. If you're producing any kind of content you need to be thinking of yourself as a media entity.

Procurement v Marketing by Agencies - Marketing 2.0
-
While this post on a Ning site (that's Jen H) is a little old I found the concept interesting. There is a real rise in procurement negotiating the agency/marketer relationship. I even know at HP we have agencies to broker certain types of deals for us. For example, the ebook campaign I concepted, worked out with Jared at Federated Media, then contacted Kristin, who's a regional HP employee to have Zenith Optemedia, our online media buyer, purchase the media with Federated Media. There's always a chance for the intent being "lost in translation". And if it wasn't for that original connection with Jared I think it would have been.

Good friend of mine, fellow HP employee and fellow blogger Chris Hawkes offers some really good advice for small businesses doing their own market research over on the NYT Small Biz Bites Blog. Chris is the perfect guy to blog about Market research. He's been doing it for years for HP and before that was apart of US Military Intelegence (I know, save the oxymoron jokes).
I especially found the comments interesting. The Market Research Association doesn't suggest startups do their own research (imagine that), but as Chris rebuts, startups usually can't afford proffesional research and something is better than nothing.

This is one (very important) reason why I believe that new media marketers should be participators themselves. Most of what I know about social media marketing I have learned by doing it. Usually through this blog. From there I'm able to leverage the successes at work.
