Wonderful calculating machine! Lady Lovelace!
The Westminster review -- Babbage as a 'Popular Author"
LOL-- good to know there's no harm, and some good, in "ladies sketching Babbage!" Did they get his hair right is what i want to know.
The romance of a pro-consul : Babbage and Street Music
Oh geez, guys, not cool. Poor old Babbage
Babbage and one of his enemies Thomas Carlyle share street music harassment; also, Babbage as 'quaint of dress'.
The Christian remembrancer - Passages review
Kind of a mean but entertaining review.. "We think any amount of street music less excruciating than Mr. Babbage's puns.." Well, fair enough.. I agree he could have included a clearer description of either of his engines though.
The River Plate magazine - Street Music
"..and this provoking kind of Babbage in bawling out his protest will fancy himself alone amongst his fellows the representative of pure intellect.." Street music ban not popular with this crowd.
The annual register - Books of the Year
"Passages" mention-- "so well known for his endeavours to construct a calculating machine, and his almost equally strenuous efforts to suppress street-music"
THE PARLIAMENTARY REMEMBRANCER - Street Music
The view against the Babbage Act-- "But if in London the Police are to arrest everybody who does anything that offends the whims or fancies of anybody else, the Police will certainly have nothing else to do, and must be made as numerous as the population."

In the course of reviewing "Passages from the Life of a Philosopher", they pretty much summarizes the whole thing and tells all the best bits. "He is not above amusing the world as well as instructing it.."
The St. James's magazine - More on the Street music act
"Now I dislike barrel organs as much as Mr Babbage..."
The Musical world - Against the Babbage Act!
"Let Mr Babbage complain that his calculating machine has been thrown out of gear-- let any surly and selfish curmudgeon, hating to see his neighbours enjoy themselves, protest against the music.."
Passages Review-- pro ecclesia del church and state
Nice little review giving due homage to Babbage's renown and genius.. though "we feel that Mr. Babbage would have done wisely to conceal his disappointments, calmly conscious that his own great genius compensates him for all the tricks of misfortune'.
Hansard's parliamentary debates - Street Music, once more with feeling
Yet another debate in Parliament
Parliamentary debates - Street Music
Mr Babbage brought up, pro and anti.
Difference engine drawings
This is kind of secondary source-- the technical description of the 1991 build of the Difference Engine-- but contains loads of the beautiful drawings from Babbage's workshop
"Babbage and not Byron should have been her father" - Google Books
Why is this book only in snippet view? Anyways, the interlocutor here is none other than Tennyson, who had of course his own encounter with the mathematical side of Babbage.
I would LOVE to see Lady Byron's face if this witticism was attempted on her.
