keywordManager is a Firefox extension providing a small tool to manage bookmark's keywords. A toolbar button is added to the "Organize Bookmarks" window. And a small dialog pops up when this button is pressed showing all existing keywords. Each listed keyword can be right-clicked to examine or manage it's properties. Double-clicking an entry will place the keyword shortcut onto the Location Bar where additional parameters can be included. Finally, some filtering capabilities are present to help finding a specific bookmark/keyword.

- Keyword prominence can be basically achieved by:
  
  making sure the most important element goes after (or is close to) the opening <body> tag in the page source code;
  including your keyword in the SEO-sensitive elements of the page: title, anchor text, bold text, alt text, etc.
- Let’s see how we can make one element/keyword of the page prominent over others:
  
  Emphasize the most important keywords of the page with the help of basic semantic structure: make sure to take full advantage of H1, H2, H3 tags to make your page structure perfectly clear to a search bot.
  Use SOC (source ordered content) technique especially in cases when your (customer’s) designer’s desires come into conflict with on-page SEO. The technique is simple and widely used: place your keyword-rich content closer to the top of the page in the source code and use CSS to order all page elements the way it pleases the web designer’s eye.
  (A copywriting technique used in journalism) Try inverted pyramid writing - that is, use the first paragraph to give a short summary of the content below and to include your keywords there (that’s also an effective blogging technique when you let those summaries appear on the home page and the full content on the single post page - thus avoiding duplicate content issue).

- Why is it so important to somehow organize your keyword modifiers?
  
  More often than not modifiers are discovered by chance (or naturally) - you publish an article for your core term and then discover that that was not the keyword itself that generated SE traffic for the page but this keyword in combination with some other word that naturally appeared within your content. Now imagine how much more traffic you could attract if this little word was used deliberately and if you actually expected this to happen. By organizing your long tail list you will:
  
  learn how to use your keywords more effectively;
  optimize your internal website structure and internal anchor text;
  get new ideas what to write about.
- Why is it hard to organize your keyword modifiers?
  
  Modifiers are hard to spot because they usually pop up unexpectedly and get lost within ‘more important’ keywords that generate higher volumes of traffic.
- So how to organize your keyword lists to get full control of your thematic search modifiers?
  
  1) Word-per-category structure: organizing modifiers based on their semantic meaning in two large categories (general and niche specific) and multiple subcategories. With words of generic meaning you have more freedom: you may use them anywhere throughout your content. For niche specific words the best way is to create a page for each of them. For ‘hair styles‘ term for example niche specific subcategories may include: age, type, and gender:
- 2) Tree-like table where ‘tree body’ is your core term and ‘tree branches’ are your thematic modifiers (I’ve described this method in my Youmoz post in more detail). This approach is most effective for organizing generic modifiers that can be used anywhere independent of the article main topic. The idea is as follows: you highlight the precedent and antecedent modifiers in different colors to quickly find one when creating new content.
- The beauty of this approach is that you can always merge any of these lines to get 5-, 6-, etc word combinations.
  
  You can also throw this data through a pivot table to see how often each word was used (hat tip to fellow Mozzer Vinny).
- 3) Hierarchic table: from two- to three-, four-, etc word combinations:
  
  This approach can be most effectively used for optimizing website internal architecture.

- Step 1. Evaluating your overall competition.
  
  You can either do it ‘at home’ using Google search and Excel or try paid tools returning complete competitor’s report. I usually perform all possible ways of analysis because I (1) cannot fully rely on reports compiled by someone else (be it an automatic tool or another person); (2) do not feel I have the full understanding of a niche unless I spend long hours on searching Google and compiling data into tables (yep, preferably multiple ones, and then combining tables into one table; but that’s just me, you can safely get along with a single solid report).
- The idea is simple: you throw all your keywords into a spreadsheet and add the following information:
  
  Google daily/monthly estimated reach (I was using data provided by Aaron’s keyword research tool);
  Overall number of results in Google (broad match);
  The site ranked #1 for each term;
  Number of results for [intitle:keyword];
  Number of results for [inanchor:keyword];
  Number of results for both [intitle:”keyword” and inanchor:”keyword”] (hat tip to Ciaran) - this is your exact competition, i.e. those who use SEO (optimized titles and incoming links anchor text).
- To save time you can get this information via SEOMoz keyword difficulty tool (it will also provide you with lots of other useful information: average PageRank of the top 10 sites, how many root URLs can be found in top 10 results, etc). Naturally, the best combination is when #1 is high, #2 is low (not necessarily) and #4, #5 and #6 are the lowest possible - the cases framed in green:
- Step 2. Finding your direct competitors
  
  After you compiled your targeted keyword list, you can sort by ‘#1 in G‘ column and see the sites that is most often ranked high in Google for your chosen keywords:
- Be sure to explore your most successful competitor’s on-site optimization: titles, H1 and H2 tags, internal site architecture, etc. I have singled out two approaches that help me to perform this kind of analysis:
  
  Don’t be too skeptical. Unfortunately most often experienced SEOs analyzing onpage optimization think they can do much better. This thought can bring you to wrongful conclusions.
  Learn from their mistakes. (I know, this somehow interferes with the first one, so the most important is balancing between the two.) We all know how to do it right. So analyzing what a competitor did well doesn’t help a lot. The art of seeing mistakes and at the same time being able to keep from underestimating (see #1) always brings to the right solution in the end.
- 1. Google Adwords Keyword Tool (free) is useful for comparing Google advertisers’ competition data and your own findings and also for differentiating commercial terms from non-commercial ones. Keywords enjoying high advertisers‘ competition are most likely targeting potential customers (while more informative [and hence less competitive] phrases usually attract people who are collecting information rather than are really willing to buy). A good way to overcome high competition while sticking to more commercial phrases is to turn (moderately) commercial phrases into long tail (e.g. per our table: ‘Tennessee fsbo‘ into ‘townsend Tennessee fsbo‘).
- 2. Compete.com (paid with a few trial searches) also provides some helpful type of analysis that can help you to evaluate your competition:
  
  “Keyword Share” shows the percentage of total referrals a site receives from a particular keyword compared to its other referrals (= this keyword referrals/other keywords referrals).
  “Keyword Engagement” shows the average time visitors tend to spend on the site after being referred by this keyword.
  “Keyword Effectiveness” all people referred by this term/total time spent on the site.
  
  While these metrics represented by Compete.com look really promising and useful, I mostly use them for self-education and out of curiosity - just because I am more used to ‘old school’ method of looking into my referrals and learn people’s actual behavior in practice. However this can still be very useful for learning the competitors’ referrals and visitors’ [probable] behavior.

- Compete.com offers affordable competitive research reports. Snoop on the competition with Compete Search Analytics. Don't be left out!
- Wordze is also recommendation worthy, though I believe it has a slightly steeper learning curve.
- Tool Limitations:
  
  This current tool is focused on overall search volume. If you want a regional keyword tool try our international keyword research tool.
  Tools can only provide helpful information and estimates. Don't let tools make your mind up for you!
  
  Don't expect precise quantitative analysis from keyword tools.
  Use tools for qualitative and relative analysis.
  People tend to typically use language in similar patterns. If there are 14,000,000 search results for ["car hire"] and only 2,000,000 pages for ["hire car"] then odds are car hire is a more common search term.

Exact search volumes are hard to find due to vanity searches, click bots, rank checkers, and other forms of automated traffic. Exceptionally valuable search terms may show far greater volume than they actually have due to various competitive commercial forces inflating search volumes due to automated search traffic.

1. Double-duty Blog Posts: Blog posts can do double-duty. What do I mean? One client of mine contracts with me to do nine posts a week for three separate blogs. Why nine?

I write one post for each blog — three different ways. This gives him three unique posts for each blog. He uses two of the posts to list in article marketing directories, and the other one to post on his blog.

In this way, he avoids the possibility of the duplicate content penalty, and has fresh content to market with in a couple of different ways.

- 2. Abstracts of Industry-Leading Publications: Another internet marketing firm I work with contracted me for a year to write abstracts of industry-leading publication articles for their site.
  
  It works like this: they send me links to articles in these publications and I write up an abstract of that article (300-400 words) for their site. I write it around a keyword phrase that they gave me.
  
  What purpose does this serve? It’s two-fold. One, it provides fresh keyworded content for their site. And two, it sets them up as an authority site because instead of reading long articles in various publications, readers can just get the main points from their site. How genius is that!
  
  As a side note, it keeps me up to date on everything that has to do with internet marketing – from newly introduced technology, to technology mergers and acquisitions, to the demographics and psychographics of web users.
- 3. Focus on Keywords: Keywords drive content. I’d say 75-80% of my clients order keyword-driven text. Eg, I want a press release about this mold remover; the keyword phrase for the piece is toxic mold remover.
