Add about a cup of soft rock phosphate to the bottom of each hole. Set the bottom of the root ball directly into this material. This is the single most important amendment you can offer your new plants.

Mortgage Lifter
85 Ind. This old heirloom will never go away, if by nothing more than the tradition it carries. Reportedly, a gentleman named 'Radiator Charlie' Byles - He located his repair shop at the foot of a steep hill autos were prone to overheat on - Crossed the four largest varieties of tomatoes he could find to develop this strain. A tomato so popular, he sold them for $1 ea. - depression era dollars - and paid off the $6000 mortgage on his farm in four years. Compare with Volaceum K-R, Brandywine OTV, Mexico, Beauty, Marmande, and Watermelon Beefsteak.

THE name in tomatoes, the flavor standard by which all other tomatoes are judged. Of all the 'Brandywine' varieties developed over the years only the choicest can carry on the name and legend. The following are my personal picks. No heirloom tomato garden is complete without at least one representative from this noble line.

herokee Purple
80 Ind. What more can I say, my best selling large fruited variety three years running. And probably the most popular ‘Heirloom’ in Texas. Damn, it even has its own website www.cherokepurple.com! Of Cherokee decent, this variety was introduced prior to 1890 in Tennessee. These large plants can offer up to 12oz. rosy-pink-purple, o.k., black fruit with deep brick red, richly flavored flesh. Excellent complex flavor, slight sweet aftertaste, perfect slicer for tomato sandwiches. I have been growing this special variety in my gardens since day one. Compare with Indian Stripe, Carbon and of course Cherokee Chocolat - 1 more annotation(s)...
