Motorola Cable MESH Wirelessly Extends the Reach of DOCSIS Infrastructure

  • Underscoring its leadership and innovation in broadband and mobility, Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) introduced a new wireless services solution, based on the company's proven MOTOwi4 wireless broadband networking platform, that enables cable operators to utilize existing HFC infrastructure to deploy scalable, area-wide Wi-Fi access throughout large and small municipalities.

The new Motorola Cable MESH can extend an operators' brand and services beyond the bounds of their wired network, and open up new opportunities to provide out-of-home services for subscribers and municipalities. The solution can efficiently expand the coverage of the hybrid-fiber coax (HFC) broadband network without running new cable, enabling seamless, wireless access to IP services outside of the home.

Motorola will showcase Cable MESH at the 2006 Cable-Tec Expo (21-23 June, Colorado Convention Center, Denver) where Motorola is exhibiting at Stand # 176.

Motorola's innovative product design includes the Motorola SB5000, DOCSIS® 2.0-compatible hardened cable modem, constructed to withstand and perform in all outdoor conditions. The modem is coupled with access point technology developed for Motorola's HotZone Duo product, which enables a choice of either single (2.4GHz, 802.11b/g) or dual (2.4GHz, 802.11b/g and 5.8GHz, 802.11a) radio network configuration to best meet coverage needs. Utilizing two radios enables dedicated user accessibility on one channel by carrying all network backhaul traffic on the other. MSOs can easily mount the solution to a municipality's streetlights, traffic lights, and other infrastructure.

Motorola announced that the Apopka, Florida, is the first city to offer its citizens wireless access using a beta system deployment of the HotZone Duo solution.

Together with HotZone Duo, Motorola Cable MESH forms a seamless wireless "mesh" that enables operators to capitalize on the generated synergies to meet strict performance and cost per square mile targets. The architecture enables links between users and the network to automatically self-form and self-heal, providing uninterrupted wireless access and continuous security as users move between access points. This mesh architecture can reduce backhaul, deployment, and operational costs while improving throughput and coverage area.

"With the Cable MESH solution, Motorola is enabling cable operators to quickly extend the reach of their networks outside of the home, without sacrificing the quality, reliability, or security they've come to expect from Motorola access network solutions," said Charles Dougherty, Motorola corporate vice president and general manager, connected home voice and data solutions. "Now, operators can quickly and cost-effectively establish secure Wi-Fi clouds, opening up new revenue opportunities from their existing data network investment."

The Motorola MOTOwi4 portfolio of wireless broadband solutions and services can create, complement and extend IP networks. Delivering wireless IP coverage to virtually all spaces, MOTOwi4 includes Fixed Broadband, MESH, Broadband over Powerline, and WiMAX solutions for private and public networks

A Fortune 100 company with global presence and impact, Motorola had sales of US $36.8 billion in 2005.
