B.F. Skinner

  • Burrhus Frederic (B.F.) Skinner majored in literature at Hamilton College in New York. He went to New York City in the late 1920s to become a writer, but he wasn't very successful. "I had nothing important to say," he later exlained. So he decided to go back to school, and went to Harvard to study psychology, since he had always enjoyed observing animal and human behavior. For the most part, the psychology department there was immersed in introspective psychology, and Skinner found himself more and more a behaviorist. He worked in the lab of an experimental biologist, however, and developed behavioral studies of rats. He had always been a tinkerer, and loved building Rube Goldberg contraptions as a kid; he put that skill to use by designing boxes to automatically reward behavior, such as depressing a lever, pushing a button, and so on. His devices were such an improvement on the existing equipment, they've come to be known as Skinner boxes.

A Real 'Theory of Everything'

  • The editorial of New Scientist of 10 December 2005 is headlined: "Ideas needed: The hunt for a theory of everything is going nowhere fast."

It underlines the parlous state of theoretical physics in its inability to reconcile relativity and quantum theory and so find what is grandly called a "theory of everything."

Making another world possible

  • Don’t stumble. Don’t fall. Lose your mental stride and you’ll end up depressed, bipolar or schizophrenic. You could wake up in a post-war mental ward feeling like your whole past is a hazy dream. And believe it, there are millions out there who know the story: gradually your motivation dims, your sleep becomes disturbed, and you lose clarity of mind.

Adbusters : A Paradigm Shift

  • It’s called an investment trap: an investor keeps putting money into a losing proposition because they can’t bear the idea of losing it all. The same applies in academia. Professors can’t give up on a particular school of thought because they’ve spent decades learning and teaching it. In the larger, rational picture, one shouldn’t consider sunk costs; that’s the past. But that’s what most of us, including economists, tend to do. They determine that since they’ve invested so much time and effort into their careers they can’t risk throwing it all away. Even if you hold them down and say “Don’t you see that this really doesn’t fit?” they’ll still resist. They can see the flaws in their worldview and assumptions, but they shrug their shoulders: “You’re right, but what am I going to do? I have to keep going. I know how to teach economics, that’s what I do for a living. What do you want me to do? Start over?”

Conspiracy Theories and Paranoia: Notes from a Mind-Control Conference (Skeptical Inquirer September 1996)

  • Doc Marqui, a self-described former "school teacher and witch," lectured about the satanic "Illuminati" conspiracy, which he alleged President Bill Clinton was part of, serving as the "anti-Christ." Marqui assured the audience that this theory is not racist; but the fact is the Illuminati theory is the same one advocated by most members of the American militia movement, and it was utilized by the Nazis in their effort to justify their campaign of genocide against the Jews of Europe (Cohn 1966). The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is an anti-Semitic document (based on the Illuminati conspiracy theory) that purports to document plans for Jewish world domination and which first appeared in Russia in 1903 in a newspaper edited by a "noted and militant anti-Semite" (Cohn 1966, p. 65). The book was instituted as mandatory reading in German schools by the Nazis in 1933 (Cohn 1966). Marqui touted the overall validity of the Protocols while replacing the word Jews with the word satanists. The Illuminati conspiracy holds, in part, that large Jewish banking families have been orchestrating various political revolutions and machinations throughout Europe and America since the late eighteenth century, with the ultimate aim of bringing about a satanic New World Order. Members of the militia movement have said they believe that the United Nations has been infiltrated by these "demonic forces" and is poised for a violent overthrow of the American government, after which American rights to own firearms will be removed and American citizens will be enslaved by the introduction of a cashless society, as foretold in the Bible's book of Revelation (see, e.g., Constantine 1995; Kelly 1995; Springmeier 1995; Stern 1996). Marqui stated that the Illuminati is essentially a shadow government that has controlled the United States since its inception, controls the Masonic order, and commits all manner of occult crime culminating in human sacrifices on eight days of each year. Much of this para

Mind, Memory, and the Psychology of Belief (Skeptical Inquirer / March 1995)

  • Carl Sagan, the astronomer and author, focused his keynote address on the importance of scientific understanding. Stressing the predictive power of science and the significant role it plays in so many aspects of our culture, Sagan affirmed our responsibility to educate society about its function. "We have a civilization based on science and technology and have cleverly arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology," he said. He also warned that it "is a clear prescription for disaster" if the circumstances are not changed.

Subliminal Perception: Facts and Fallacies (Skeptical Inquirer Spring 1992)

  • What is subliminal perception? Should we be worried (or perhaps enthused) about covert manipulation of thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors? My reviews (Moore 1982;1988) have dealt primarily with the validity of the more dramatic claims made on behalf of subliminal techniques and devices. Such an appraisal requires a working definition of "subliminal perception." Then we need to determine whether the conditions under which it occurs and the means by which it is achieved are reflected in the products on the market.

Why People Won't See - Rense.com

  • Are we willing to look at the truth as we perceive it and try to identify and admit our own complicity in all these atrocities, as the American government runs around the world shooting innocent women and children in the head over reasons we KNOW are lies. I mean, we're supposed to be fighting terrorists, right, but we KNOW these terrorists are not Muslim malcontents, and that most likely they are CIA/Mossad-contracted mercenaries assigned to kill Iraqi aid workers, behead innocents and blow up churches and mosques in order to inflame the situation to kindle support from the braindead public, who then mindlessly cheer the genocidal tactics of George W. Bush and pretend not to notice that not only did America CREATE the terrorists and start the war with phony evidence, we now continue the war as viciously as we can, continually murdering innocents and turning our own troops into raging psychopaths. Why? Increased profits for the military contractors, of course, which means increased under-the-table payments for our elected officials.
