On December 26, 2004 a magnitude 9.3 earthquake occurred in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Sumatra in Malaysia. It caused a powerful tsunami which devastated coastal regions of many countries leaving over 240,000 people either dead or missing. It was the worst tsunami to affect this area since the 1883 explosion of Krakatao. The earthquake that produced it was so strong that it exceeded by a factor of 10 the next most powerful earthquake to occur anywhere in the past 25 years.

12/15/06 "Information Clearing House" -- -- The booming credit card business is one of the most profitable and destructive industries to ever emerge from the inventive capitalist mind. Citibank is raking in more money than Microsoft and Wal-Mart. Obscene profits are realized without lifting a finger to perform any physical work. In 2004 a single credit card company—the MBNA—realized 1.5 times the profits of fast food industry giant McDonald’s. Collecting on credit card debt is a very lucrative business.
With origins in South Dakota, the modern credit card industry began realizing obscene profits as a result of deregulation. The Supreme Court also played a pivotal role in expanding banking industry profits by lifting limits to the amount of additional fees credit card companies could charge their customers. The sky is the limit now. Industry deregulation has resulted in the systemic fleecing of consumers by practices that can only be described as willful and predatory in nature.

Human Research Subject Protections for National Security Experiments

It was a great honor for me to have this paper graded by Professor Sims. I knew of Sims in the often-cited 1985 US Supreme Court case, CIA v. Sims, a freedom of information lawsuit. The Court held that institutions and individuals who performed research on a project [Project MKULTRA], financed by the CIA, were “intelligence sources” and, therefore, the [CIA] Director was authorized to withhold their identities, to protect intelligence sources and methods from unauthorized disclosure. This paper will discuss the widespread deference to national security as illustrated in the unanimous holding in CIA v. Sims. As will be shown below, this deference is also a powerful factor in human subject legal protections for secret government experiments, including the MKULTRA and radiation experiments. National security law provides a valid and reliable framework in which to analyze human research subject protections for national security experiments.

"HAARP is a Pentagon sponsored radio physics project, officially intended to expand knowledge about the nature of long-range radio communications and surveillance using the fluctuating Ionosphere (the portion of the upper atmosphere extending from 35 to 500 miles above the earth's surface).
According to John L. Heckscher of Philips Laboratory at Hanscom Air Force Base, potential military applications of the HAARP research include developing Department of Defense technology for detecting cruise missiles and communicating with submarines. "Although HAARP is being managed by the Air Force and the Navy it is purely a scientific facility that poses no threat to potential adversaries and has no value as a military target," he says. But thats just the publicly announced part. The HAARP also has a secret agenda, pursuing more exotic military goals, such as locating deeply buried weapons factories thousands of miles away, and even altering local weather conditions above the enemy's territory.
