Reduce Your Cat’s Carbon Paw Print With CatGenie’s Self-Flushing Litter Box : TreeHugger

  • Cats need to dig, so they need a litter box. But one ounce of cat urine consumes three ounces of clumping cat litter, which must be hauled to the dump. The standard clumping litter is not biodegradable and is made from sodium bentonite which has been linked to cat deaths (the link points to a TreeHugger forum discussion about this issue). The source of todium bentonite? Strip-mines in Wyoming and Brazil. Can you believe that we are strip mining for cats?

FEED - February 2007 Manitoba limits hog farms

  • Manitoba limits hog farms
The Canadian province of Manitoba has placed a moratorium on construction of new hog farms until it has determined whether it is environmentally safe to expand hog operations. The crowded, unsanitary conditions under which hogs are typically raised can cause health problems for both humans and animals. Furthermore, the production of large amounts of manure in a single location can contaminate soil and waterways because there is simply too much manure for the surrounding farmland to absorb. In a move welcomed by the environmental community, Manitoba's Clean Environment Commission announced that it would review all proposed projects to determine the impact on water quality of expanding hog operations.

On soy vs. meat | By Umbra Fisk | Grist | Ask Umbra | 12 Oct 2005

  • And dairy is also better than meat, although both come from animals. Dairy cows produce many times their body weight in milk each year, while cattle produce less than their body weight in meat. Using a somewhat similar amount of land and feed, dairy herds produce three and a half times the weight in food.
  • take a look at the numbers from UCS, which compared red meat and pasta. Meat used 20 times the land, and generated thrice the greenhouse-gas emissions. Ye who have obeyed my Buy the Book Command know UCS splits water pollution into two categories, common (caused by soil and biological matter) and toxic. Meat was worse in the former category by a factor of 17, and in the latter by a factor of 5. UCS also estimates that a quarter of the threats and damage to U.S. ecosystems and wildlife comes from the production of the meat and poultry we eat.

Do I Dare to Eat a Shrimp? (TreeHugger)

  • The mangrove forests that shimp farming destroy are also important buffers against tsunamis.

“Industrial shrimp aquaculture is one of the main reasons for the destruction of coastal mangrove forests. These wilderness areas act as a natural buffer against stormy weather. Areas with intact mangrove zones suffered fewer human deaths due to the Dec 2004 tsunamis.

The tsunami disaster that occurred in the Indian Ocean is beyond comprehension – over 200,000 people dead, scores more injured, and massive destruction. Earthquakes and tsunamis are unavoidable, but the severity of this disaster could have been greatly lessened had healthy mangrove forests and coral reefs been conserved along these now devastated coastlines. Instead, these vital protective buffers known for reducing flood and storm damage, have been uprooted for unsustainable developments such as industrial shrimp aquaculture, tourism and urban expansion.“

Brian, why not do both? Boycott shrimp and work for better conditions.
