Plugin Manager in Core (part deux) | Acquia
Drupal currently doesn't have a web based module updater. At the moment, you can be notified by the sites you run that updates are available - it will email you these notifications. However, you need to use non-web based means to swap the old code for the new (FTP, CVS, SVN, WebDav, Windoze Exploder, etc).
The Plug-In manager will allow the updates (and installations) to be done through the admin interface.
