Toyota to Mass-Produce Plug-In Hybrid in 2012... For $48,000! : TreeHugger

Too Bad the Electric Range is Pathetic
Certainly, it's a good thing that Toyota will start mass-producing a plug-in hybrid. But once you look at the numbers and specs, the news doesn't sound quite as good anymore. The company plans to produce about 20,000-30,000 plug-in hybrids (almost certainly based on the 3rd generation Toyota Prius), but sadly, the PHEVs will only have a range of 20-30 km (12.4-18.6 miles). What the hell is that, Toyota? A smaller electric range than the Chevy Volt at a price almost as high as a Tesla Model S!

Driving the airless Air Car could be a better experience

Last December, Green Car Advisor's Nick Kurczewski was able to snag a ride in MDI's AIRPod. Now, the lucky punk journalist has taken a turn behind the wheel. The short version of his review: this could be the car of the future and it feels like an amusement park ride, but it's no Millennium Falcon. Seriously.

As we know, the Air Car uses compressed air to power a small two-cylinder engine. The 180cc poweplant produces 5.4 horsepower, but MDI is working on a upgraded AIRPod GT will have 8 hp. Kurczewski says the AIRPod's joystick steering is modified from the original design, which would have seen the speed and deceleration controlled by the stick as well as direction. That complicated-sounding mess has been scrapped in favor of more traditional pedals + joystick.

Check out all the details - including why driving a bubble car with no openable windows in June is not a good idea and how MDI plans to bring dozens of AIRPods to airports and universities and other locations around the world - over at Inside Line.

Here are the first photos of BMW's latest concept car, the 5 Series Gran Turismo, which debuted this morning for international media via an online webcast. Conceptually, it was designed to blur the boundaries between existing vehicle types – it’s for the consumer that wants a vehicle in between a sport-utility vehicle and a sports sedan; the practicality of the former with the styling and dynamic abilities of the latter.

Toyota is definitely maybe developing solar-powered car - Engadget

Around half a year ago, we heard that Toyota was engineering a Prius that would get part of its energy from the sun; now, we're seeing an eerily similar story from Japan suggesting that the plan is still on. In a rather odd report, it's noted that the automaker is "secretly (oh, is it now?) developing a vehicle that will be powered solely by solar energy," though it's also working on a partially solar-powered whip that'll come out long before the pure solar alternative. Regrettably, details beyond that are few and far between, though the premise here is completely reasonable given the current economy and the desire for automobiles that run on anything other than petroleum. Guess we'll check back in six months for yet another elusive report on the so-called progress.

Truthdig - Reports - Bailout or Bust: How to Save the Big Three From Themselves

The American automobile industry occupies a near-mythic status in the nation’s cultural and economic imagination. President-elect Barack Obama echoes the sentiments of many when he says that Detroit is “the backbone of American manufacturing.” If it is—Detroit’s economic importance is great but now occupies a lesser role than it did before it entered a slow-but-steady decline in the 1970s—then it suffers from acute and advanced damage that will require major surgery. And like any major surgery, treating Detroit’s malaise will be a complicated affair with no assurance of success. However, doing nothing may be worse, especially for the state of Michigan.

Zero Pollution Motors: A Car That Can Run on Compressed Air

"MDI founder and CEO Guy Negre invented the first zero emissions Compressed Air Car prototype in 1997. The new generation Air Car features a secondary bio-fuel energy source and compresses air while driving to achieve a remarkable 96 mph, 106 mpg and up to 850 miles range. The vehicle can hold six people, and includes space for luggage or other cargo. According to the team, the Compressed Air Car runs entirely on compressed air when it is traveling under 35 mph. At higher speeds, the compressed air is heated, and thus expands before it enters the engine, resulting in what the team says is a much longer range. A small amount of fuel, either gasoline or diesel, is needed to heat the air. The air in the tank can be compressed using a regular electric outlet."
