Chole (or chana) masala is a popular vegetarian dish throughout Northern India. In this easy recipe, chickpeas and tomatoes are simmered with a mixture of fried garlic, ginger, onion, and serrano chiles plus traditional Indian spices like cumin, garam masala, coriander, and turmeric. Top this spicy, fragrant dish with cooling yogurt and a drizzle of sweet-tart pomegranate molasses, then spoon it over steamed rice or scoop it up with naan.

Using prepared red curry paste is an easy and fast way to add traditional Thai flavors to this vegetarian one-pot meal. Start by sautéing onion, bell pepper, garlic, and ginger with red curry paste, then add coconut milk to create the base for the stew. Chunks of kabocha squash simmer in the base for about 20 to 25 minutes, enough time for the curry to thicken, creating a creamy and slightly sweet dish. Spoon it over steamed white rice or brown rice and pack up any leftovers for a hearty lunch.

"Healthy treats seems like a bit of an oxymoron – if it’s healthy, it isn’t a treat, right? However, these virtually guilt-free bites are just that, a sweet treat that smacks of sheer indulgence but without the refined sugar and fat normally associated with most desserts or candy. And should you want one, two or more as a frequent afternoon snack, go right ahead."  - via Deanna

Crossed Paths is a game for 5 to 5000 people who want to create stories through an improvisational activity. To use gaming terminology, Crossed Paths is a light diceless roleplaying game that does not require a game master. It is ideal for libraries and schools, but will work well in any setting where participants are able to make noise. It works well with both children and adults (and can serve as an icebreaker for mixed groups). The full activity takes about one hour to complete, but the activity can be shortened to thirty minutes.

Crossed Paths takes place in two parts. During the first part, participants will select a book, story, folktale, television show, or movie that they know well enough to choose a Setting, Character, and Conflict from. In the second part, participants work as a group to create a story that mixes the Settings, Characters, and Conflicts in some way that makes sense. The goal of each group is to create their own new story and enjoy the experience of group improvisation.

This packet contains a facilitator’s guide and a worksheet. Ideally, each participant should have a copy of the worksheet and a pen or pencil; however, a blank index card or sheet of paper will suffice instead of the worksheet.

“There is a library because we are here and knowledge is necessary for survival.”

“Guerrilla libraries exist for many reasons:
– To meet the information needs of a hard to reach group
– To surprise and entertain
– To enhance people’s enjoyment of an event
– To educate and inform as conveniently as possible
– To offer a common space for education and intellectual engagement outside of traditional spaces like universities and public libraries”

Video games are moving out of the dorm and into the library. The University of Michigan's Computer & Video Game Archive, which opened in 2008 in the basement of the Art, Architecture and Engineering Library, is filled with multiple gaming stations. The University of Wisconsin at Whitewater added games to its collection in 2010, and the State University of New York at Stony Brook will open a new gaming lab in the library this fall, along with a collection of older equipment to be housed in the library's special collections.

The facilities are following scholarship. Games are now used in English classes studying interactive narratives, media-studies classes looking at the cultural impact of violent games, as well as courses in game design offered at about 300 colleges. "The argument is really pretty simple," says David S. Carter, an engineering librarian at Michigan. "We have faculty who are doing stuff involved in video games, so the library needs to be doing something to support that teaching and that research."
