hakia
hakia is a new search engine based on semantic technology, based on quality rather than popularity. The interface is clean and not intimidating as well as the results pages. Queries are encourage to be written in question form, which looks great for students learning to do searches. Not sure if this is a true search enigine or a directory, though - librarians contribute credible sites to the search data base. There is a "club hakia," like a "my hakia" (needs registration) that looks like it will be for social networking - we'll see how well that works. Club hakia gives access to credible sites, news, an image search, and galleries. It also has a page where you can make side by side comparisons of queries between hakia and either google or yahoo - pretty impressive!
