At the presentation of the paper "Using FOAF to Support Community Building" at the IADIS Web-Based Collaboration conference in March 2004, I proposed that its future conferences should seek to encourage use of FOAF to support community building across delegates. This suggestion was accepted by the conference organisers and we will consider how to implement it.

In reply to Canter's accusation that the XRI/XDI proponents are "paranoid maniacs," Del Torto retorts: "Well, he's got his head firmly rooted in the sand, bless his colorful little tail feathers. Open research into these privacy mechanisms is absolutely essential, and anytime a corporation tries to 'sell' you your own privacy, you should run, not walk, away from them like the snake oil salesmen, snake oil apologists, or ostriches they really are."

If I claim my name is "Edd Dumbill," and that claim is attributed to me, it might prove a more trustworthy fact than if somebody else asserted it. (In other circumstances, you might not consider me a trustworthy source of information about myself. Being able to trace who said what is a necessary condition for building a system of trust, but this is not generally sufficient by itself.)

By this point, I hope you can see the power that merging offers. By aggregating and merging the FOAF files, you can achieve the same effect as operating a centralized directory service, without any of the issues of single points of failure or control. This is a very attractive feature for many communities for which decentralized or devolved control is a requirement, either because of political structure or sheer size.

To "metadata is too hard": yes, right now it is. That's why I'm writing an article about easier ways to do it; you did catch the word "easy" in there about a zillion times, right? Now, I'll admit that it's pretty hard to come up with a standard, unanimous way to classify absolutely everything — my degree is in philosophy, so believe me when I say I know this — but that's not what this is about. This is about common, useful everyday metadata like "Alice is my friend," which shouldn't need a half-dozen ontology and information-representation markup syntaxes to explain.
