The CSS width: and height: properties apply only to block elements, not to inline elements.

The disappearing background color is caused by the fact that floated elements aren't in the normal text flow and don't have any real height. So, the whole division currently has a height of zero, which makes its background color disappear. Weird, I know. Not to worry. We're not done yet.
