Talk at Edspace Event, University of Southampton « UK Web Focus

Instead I’ll raise the question of the network as the platform in the context of the futures for educational resource repositories. I’ll suggest that as experts predict further cuts in the public sector, including higher education, wouldn’t it be appropriate for our repository services to be hosted in the cloud? And the concerns which tend to be raised (sustainability, reliability, legal issues, etc.) are implementation details which do need to be addressed – but these aren’t the important policy issues.

Times Higher Education - Get more eyes on your site

Russell Stannard, a THE Award winner for his work with ICT, offers practical tips on how to increase the visibility of a website with your open education resources

There is nothing new about the idea that open education resources could be an effective way of marketing courses in higher education. The strategy has been part of the internet since Day One. You offer free materials, people consume the content, and then they come back for more.

What has changed is that there is now so much content on the web that your offering might never be found. This is not a problem for the big players in the open education resources game because they have the clout to get the message out there. So I wasn’t surprised to read that the 10,000 hours of content released by The Open University had led to 5 million visitors to the institution’s site and an extra 10,000 registrations. But what about the open education resources content from just one course at one university?

7 Things You Should Know About Cloud Computing | EDUCAUSE

Cloud computing is the delivery of scalable IT resources over the Internet, as opposed to hosting and operating those resources locally, such as on a college or university network. Those resources can include applications and services, as well as the infrastructure on which they operate. By deploying IT infrastructure and services over the network, an organization can purchase these resources on an as-needed basis and avoid the capital costs of software and hardware. With cloud computing, IT capacity can be adjusted quickly and easily to accommodate changes in demand. Cloud computing also allows IT providers to make IT costs transparent and thus match consumption of IT services to those who pay for such services. Operating in a cloud environment requires IT leaders and staff to develop different skills, such as managing contracts, overseeing integration between in-house and outsourced services, and mastering a different model of IT budgets.

How to Embrace Full Potential of eLearning?

Saarbrücken (GER)/Sevenoaks (UK), May 2009 – An independent study recently launched by eLearning and advanced-content-solutions provider IMC (UK) Learning Ltd revealed that although three quarters (74%) of universities have virtual learning environments (VLE) to support teaching and learning, only 14% of lecturers publish their recorded lectures on them.

The survey, entitled 'Examining eLearning in Higher Education: Perceptions and Reality', asked 125 academic and operational staff in universities, business schools, and university colleges their views on eLearning. Specific focuses were how it is currently used in universities and the perceptions of its benefits and shortfalls.

UK universities offer downloadable lectures | Education | Education Guardian

Prof Peter Mobbs, who leads the academic aspect of UCL on iTunes U, said: "Our students will be able to revisit materials presented to them in lectures, so they can learn anywhere and anytime.

"Furthermore, our students are among the world's best and brightest, and I want them to be involved in generating and sharing their own content - discovery, analysis, imaginings - through audio and visual media, in collaboration with staff and other students."

Prof Denise Kirkpatrick, pro-vice-chancellor (Learning and Teaching) at The Open University, said: "Making available selected video and audio items from among the university's highly-rated course materials via iTunes U to audiences worldwide offers a new channel for the university. We can open up free access to educational resources as well as a window for our potential students." A number of top US universities, including, Stanford, Yale and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, already publish materials via the iTunes U service.

The Burgess Review — ADM-HEA

“The Higher Education Academy welcomes the significant contribution made by the committee in investigating a complex and contentious area. The report reflects extensive consultation with universities and employers and is an important staging post in the development of the higher education system.

“The principal focus of measures of student achievement should be on students themselves. They deserve to get a richer picture of what they have learned. The Higher Education Achievement Reports proposed by the committee will provide an opportunity to recognise the breadth of student achievement, over and above traditional degree classifications. The Higher Education Academy will support universities and colleges in sharing effective assessment practices and developing systems that will enhance everyone's understanding of what students gain from their experience of higher education”

A critical review of the use of the concept of reflection in Higher Education

This paper considers the various definitions of reflection and its role in learning. It suggests two approaches take to the use of reflection in education. Soft approaches that highlight reflection as important in learning and activities may be suggested to students to improve their learning. Hard approaches have more techniques to train people to reflect effectively. The paper considers issues and problems with both approaches and the implications for educational practice.
