The DealMap was one of the first startups to really nail the plotting of daily deals on an interactive map, and unsurprisingly the startup was scooped up by Google last August. There are plenty of awesome deal aggregators out there, but CityMaps wants to be the next generation, the ultimate aggregator not only of location, local business, and deal data, but also of social data, adding another few layers to the interactive map experience.

And how does this relate to hyperlocal? Lots has been made of social and local and search, and potential happy confluences of this trio. To date, however, email remains as viable a social tool as anything else when it comes to hyperlocal topics. Yes, Facebook is useful. But its usefulness relates closely to the density of friends you have on Facebook in your local area – a highly variable situation. And Facebook does not make it easy for you to tap into the degrees of separation for local recommendations a la LinkedIn. Equally difficult has been the hyperlocal media movement, which has done a fine job at broadcast (in some places) but has largely failed to add viable social curation tools to the mix.

What is interesting (contentious, even) is how location data is becoming commoditised.

Data is being gathered on your location sharing. This is the future of Foursquare: while dismissed as being “time-wasting” by Forrester, Foursquare sees its future in mining the location data it is building up. This data will allow Foursquare’s selected partners (i.e. advertisers) to create offers more carefully targeted to your needs. It will perhaps help link local, small businesses to local consumers, which is surely a good thing.
