  • These news gaps include Port Talbot, a 50,000-strong community in South Wales which has been without a local newspaper since 2009 when the Port Tablot and Neath Guardians were both closed by Trinity Mirror.

    While Port Talbot continues to be covered by regional daily – the South Wales Evening Post – it no longer has the in-depth coverage offered by its own title.

  • Archant has released a range of 60 titles, including local papers from its east of England division, plus a range of "Life" brand magazines, including Cotswold Life.
     
     Apps of local Archant titles the Eastern Daily Press, Ipswich Star, Norwich Evening News and East Anglian Daily Times cost £9.99, the same as the price charged by the Guardian and Telegraph.

  • The Community Organisers Programme
     

     
    Naomi Diamond spoke about the new £80 million Government funded programme to train 5,000 community organisers over the next fours years. The organisers, who will be recruited and hosted by local community organisations will listen to residents in their homes, on the street and where they gather, and they will listen to public service and third sector workers, small businesses and local institutions to help ‘develop their collective power to act together for the common good, as identified locally’.

  • And how does this relate to hyperlocal? Lots has been made of social and local and search, and potential happy confluences of this trio. To date, however, email remains as viable a social tool as anything else when it comes to hyperlocal topics. Yes, Facebook is useful. But its usefulness relates closely to the density of friends you have on Facebook in your local area – a highly variable situation. And Facebook does not make it easy for you to tap into the degrees of separation for local recommendations a la LinkedIn. Equally difficult has been the hyperlocal media movement, which has done a fine job at broadcast (in some places) but has largely failed to add viable social curation tools to the mix.
