Building the 21st-Century Mind: Scientific American
An interview with Howard Gardner about his book 5 minds for the future. Although our existing models of learning are reasonably good for developing a disciplined mind, they have almost nothing to say about the synthesizing mind, though it is arguably the most important mind for the 21st century

Add Sticky NoteAlthough our existing models of learning are reasonably good for developing a disciplined mind, they have almost nothing to say about the synthesizing mind, though it is arguably the most important mind for the 21st century.
- So let's make synthesis part of our goal. I think the High Tech High video showed their efforts on asking students to synthesize. - on 2009-04-03

Add Sticky Noterespectful and ethical—these are generally considered beyond the purview of theories of learning.
- But still critical and I think these are developed at GDS and are one of the reasons parents choose an independent school for their children. - on 2009-04-03

The Premature Death of “Small Schools”
The attributes that the author describes as essential for the success of small schools are essential for real success in any school. Well articulated though.
-
These attributes are simple, yet essential. We must have high expectations. We must share a common focus. We must provide time for school staff to collaborate. We must deploy performance-based instructional strategies. We must enact distributed leadership across the schools. We must hold all schools and classrooms accountable through the use of relevant data. And we must invest in teacher professional development.
ALA | AASL Standards for the 21st-Century Learner
These standards are really well done. I like them better than the ISTE standards. My only beef is the prominent mention of employment skills and technology in conjunction with one another. Technology is about much more than employment skills. Yes, they get at that deeper in the document, but it still irks me. One of the best lines "learning has a social context."
Ideas and Thoughts from an EdTech » THIS is a 21st Century Skill
The title of this blog post is THIS is a 21st Century Skill. The author discusses the fact that the ability to make a comprehensible, on-message, and appealing video is becoming a literacy. Is this new? No, not the communication piece, but the medium is new as a universal. Essentially, everyone is a commercial director and the product is yourself.
Twitter gets you fired in 140 characters or less - Technotica- msnbc.com
Is this a literacy we need to teach? Poor discretion to say the least.
How do we meet a challenge like my nephew? Digital natives coming to a school near you.
Interesting blog post. The author has a good point about the fact that the real "digital natives" being those children who are just now entering school. They can't imagine a world without YouTube. With parents who are, while not natives, confident in their use of tech. I wonder, will this jump keep happening every few years? Or will we finally get to a point where change is the norm and a generation has come to be as adept at unlearning as past generations have been at learning?
Clive Thompson on How YouTube Changes the Way We Think
This sort of addresses the question of "there's a lot of writing" in this PLN stuff. Except this article is only about connecting, not necessarily an online dialogue. However, there's a learning project in here too.

Dangerously Irrelevant: 21st century curricula
The text of this blog entry is thoughtful, but not full of new info. However, there are some really startling graphs here about what students' futures look like.
Council for Aid to Education
This assessment (which Tony Wagner praised in GEC) was much discussed at NAIS this year. There was an unofficial presentation (I missed it) and their booth was pretty busy when I went by. The Lawrenceville School (which has some programs I admire) along with some others is using this assessment. One component of the assessment is calculating your school's "value-add" beyond the standardized test scores. You can see a sample report on the site.
Will Depth Replace Breadth in Schools? - Class Struggle - Jay Mathews on Education
Nice article on the depth vs breadth debate--cites research, gets specific about subject areas, looks a college success and the comments left by readers are thoughtful and add to the content instead of just chime in.
-
national study says that students who spend at least a month on just one topic in a high school science course get better grades in a freshman college course in that subject than students whose high school courses were more balanced.
-
AP’s exact approach is not clear yet, but College Board officials said they too will embrace depth. They have been getting much praise for this from the National Science Foundation,

Kim Cofino writes this blog. Her job title is 21st Century Literacy Specialist at the International School Bangkok in Thailand. I've been a fan of hers for a while--this post is one that she reminded me of on my blog post titled "Meeting is not collaborating." Kim's writing is strong and enjoyable to read--she's a good example of the slope of journalism Clay Shirky discusses.
