      Abstract

This paper presents a simple but accurate method to calculate shell side heat transfer coefficient in a single segmental shell and tube heat exchanger. The method is based on a chart which is a product of actual data taken over a span of several years. The calculation procedure is presented with a case study. The results are compared with known methods and commercial/proprietary computer codes prevalent in the industry. The results from this method compare well with HTRI computer program. This method can prove to be a helpful tool for design engineers in the field.

    About the Book:
The aim of this book is to present to the students, teachers and practising engineers, a comprehensive collection of various material property data and formulae in the field of heat and mass transfer. The material is organized in such a way that a reader who has gone through the engineering curriculum could easily use the formulae and data presented in heat transfer calculations. Hence this compilation is primarily intended as an adjunct to a standard text.

The data book devotes considerable space to the property values of materials-solids, liquids and gases-that are commonly used in heat transfer situations. Property values for various materials at different temperatures are given for the use of designers.

The formulae for conduction, convection, radiation, boiling, condensation, heat exchangers and mass transfer are arranged in an easily usable tabular form with symbols and units explained alongside. The limitations and restrictions in the use of empirical relationships are also mentioned alongside. The empirical formulae and charts have been selected with a view to presenting as much information as possible which are simple and straightforward for use without much of mathematical manipulation.

Suggestions received since the appearance of the fourth edition have been incorporated, as far as possible, in the new edition. A number of charts and data have been added to enhance the value of the book. The presentation on convection has been enlarged, taking into account the recent publications. Only SI units are retained as all the universities are adopting SI system. This book is a comprehensive collection of heat transfer information for students and practitioners.

      Abstract

In a computer-based design, many thousands of alternative exchanger configurations may be examined. Computer codes for design are organized to vary systematically the exchanger parameters such as, shell diameter, baffle spacing, number of tube-side pass to identify configurations that satisfy the specified heat transfer and pressure drops. A computer-based design model was made for preliminary design of shell-and-tube heat exchangers with single-phase fluid flow both on shell and tube side. The program covers segmentally baffled U-tube, and fixed tube sheet heat exchangers one-pass and two-pass for tube-side flow. The program determines the overall dimensions of the shell, the tube bundle, and optimum heat transfer surface area required to meet the specified heat transfer duty by calculating minimum or allowable shell-side pressure drop.

    Object-oriented heat transfer software application

    • Abstract
A heat transfer solver has been developed using an object-oriented approach, which allows the heat transfer problem to be set up and solved easily with ease and user-friendliness. The solver is developed as a Window application using Java programming. It can solve several types of heat transfer problems such as one-dimensional steady-state heat conduction through a plane wall, cylinder, or sphere, with temperature, heat flux, and convective boundary conditions (BCs), one-dimensional transient heat conduction through a plane wall, lumped system analysis, extended heat transfer surface, forced convection over a flat plate, and radiation. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
