I agree. As a tool to think about art it's a useful idea. But it's just too much of a reduction to claim its universality. Personally, I'm more in favor of a layered look on things: different levels of reality provide different insights that do not have to give (absolute) proof on anything. Recently i've found a formal description of such a view in Deleuze and Guattari's concept of a "rhizome".
The anti-art gene is a funny concept :-). Let's not breed it out though, because that would probably invalidate most of the art produced. - rubyrubyruby on 2009-08-17
