How Did We Survive Without Gmail? - Forbes.com
-
Gmail was launched on April Fool's Day 2004 because its premise, a gigabyte--more than 1,000 megabytes--of storage for everyone, was ridiculous. When I first read about it, I dismissed it as prank by a playful company.
-
When I tried it a few days later, more silliness: There was no obvious delete button. After all, with 1 GB of space, why delete anything? There was also no way to sort e-mail by sender, date received or size of message. The service wasn't open to all comers at first--you had to be invited by a friend. And most silly of all: Gmail bundled together all messages with the same subject line into what it called a "conversation" instead of letting them stay in the order received.

Bug #217580 in firefox-3.0 (Ubuntu): “Slow performance with Gmail”
Here's a real workaround for Gmail:
1. Install the Stylish Add-on (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2108)
2. Right click the icon --> Write style --> For google.com
3. Add "*{border-style: none !important;}"
