UbuntuOne[1] est un nouveau service mis en place par Canonical[2] similaire à Dropbox[3]. Il s'agit d'un hébergement de vos données sur des serveurs à distance ainsi que la possibilité de synchroniser ces données entre de multiples ordinateurs.

Concrètement après l'installation hyper-simple et bien décrite sur cette page[4] du logiciel client, vous vous retrouverez avec un répertoire dans lequel il suffira de glisser vos données afin qu'elles soient automatiquement sauvegardées sur les serveurs et synchronisées avec d'éventuels autres ordinateurs.

Le système est encore en phase de développement (Beta) et il propose pour le moment de stocker gratuitement 2Go de données ou 10Go avec un abonnement de 10$(USD) par mois. Vous pouvez demander à participer à la phase de test[5].

Mais s'arrêter à ne voir qu'un simple système de sauvegarde serait des plus réducteur. L'accès aux serveurs passe par un ensemble d'API qui vont permettre aux développeurs de créer des logiciels encore plus puissants. On peut imaginer facilement un logiciel de discussions instantanées utilisant ce système afin de transférer, partager vos données avec vos contacts et ainsi de suite. Mon petit doigt me dit que nous ne sommes qu'au début d'un mouvement qui pourrait impacter de manière importante notre façon d'utiliser l'ordinateur spécialement sous Ubuntu
