The myth of the page fold: evidence from user testing
Posted Friday, September 18th, 2009 by Joe Leech
As web professionals, we all know that the concept of the page fold being an impenetrable barrier for users is a myth. Over the last 6 years we’ve watched over 800 user testing sessions between us and on only 3 occasions have we seen the page fold as a barrier to users getting to the content they want.

TechnoStress: Media

People feel driven, like they have to keep up, or they'll be lost forever."
"People compare themselves to the technology. ... It seems so alive. It talks to you, it flashes in your face ... Users, especially the more hesitant ones, take the glitches personally, because of the perception that technology never fails.

Indeed technological developments empowered people to express themselves and allowed them to participate in projects and share creations on a much larger scale than before. They also transformed the business of content distribution since part of the users is no longer interested in the whole lot offered by for instance news papers or music labels, but in their own selection of it.
What is the value of this content? What is the impact of it on traditional media and publishing? Will we evolve to a more flexible copyright system? What are the influences of nations/states/regions and other regulators of the online/mobile market

Beyond the curiosity factor, he sees myware as a way people can deal with information overload simply by measuring how they spend time online. He also sees it as valuable information that they someday could exchange for something else beneficial.
Companies like Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo are trying to collect as much information about you as possible. Whenever you sign up with them for a service that requires a password (such as e-mail, My Yahoo, or personalized search), you are laying the groundwork for them to one day track your behavior across different parts of the Web through your online identity. If this information is so valuable, why not collect it yourself?
Data Collection Techniques
-
Originally, web analytics data was primarily collected through the use of log files. Later, the development of page tags and network data collectors allowed businesses to compile additional types of valuable data.
