Applets for math courses below calculus
"These following collection of applets are designed for use in mathematics courses below the level of calculus. Some of the applets were developed at SLU and some have been developed elsewhere and are included by permission. If you would like to host the applets locally, please contact Mike May, S.J. "

GraphSketch
Easy to use graphing utility. No adds easy to setup different windows, graph multiple functions.
Regifting Robin
If you are looking for an activity to have your students investigate, then this is a great little activity. Let them investigate (try a couple of examples), look for a pattern with the numbers (any two digit number minus the sum of the digits will produce a number with some very identifiable characteristics), then explore the second page of the challenge for what happens each time regarding those numbers... great fun, very educational, great way for students to look for patterns/make observations.
Main Page - GeoGebraWiki
GeoGebraWiki is a free pool of teaching materials for the dynamic mathematics software GeoGebra. Everyone can contribute and upload materials! All contents of this pool may be used free of charge.
Reflections of a High School Math Teacher: Finding the Regression Curve of a Sin Graph in Precalculus Class
I like Dave's blog for several reasons. He gives his students voice, he uses technology well, and he seems to find some interesting activities for his students. This post is right up my alley; he uses data that is relevent to his students, has them do some basic analysis and then in explore other data and compare/analyze the data with the original (relevant) data!
A Calculating Web Site Could Ignite a New Campus 'Math War' - Chronicle.com
I love the Wolfram Alpha site, if it does ignite another math war, then I'm OK with it. I think what it means is that we have to ask students different questions, ask them better questions, make them create their own problems, interpret their answers, decide what methods are most efficient and why, but don't stop asking them questions just because some are going to use the available tools.
AAAS - Project 2061 - 2061 Connections - NSDL Science Literacy Maps
How do instruction, curriculum, and professional development influence middle grades students’ algebra learning? Project 2061, in collaboration with the
University of Delaware and Texas A&M University, investigated this question as part of an Interagency Education Research Initiative (IERI) project to study the impact of professional development and curriculum materials on instruction and student achievement for specific learning goals in middle school mathematics.

focused all aspects of the study on a single clearly defined learning goal
for grades 7 and 8:Symbolic equations can be used to summarize how the quantity of something
changes over time or in response to other changes. -
using four different curricula.
Math Fluency | Scholastic.com
Brain research is indicating that students need to be able to fluently/efficiently need to be able to compute basic skills while performing higher-level skills. No easy answer about how to develop these basic skills in older students who are still struggling, but does make a direct connection between basic skills and number sense. Important to continue to understand that these skills can and need to be developed in upper grades.

“Cognitive psychologists have discovered that humans have fixed limits on the attention and memory that can be used to solve problems. One way around these limits is to have certain components of a task become so routine and over-learned that they become automatic.” Whitehurst, 2003
-
The research cited above highlights the importance of math fact fluency; however, the computation capabilities of American students appear to be falling. Tom Loveless of the Brookings Institute has reviewed responses to select items on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and concluded that performance on basic arithmetic facts declined in the 1990s (Loveless, 2003).
Datasets
Great source for data sets for data analysis. Even identifies the concept to be used with the data.
GCalc - Ver 2.0 Documentation
Easy to use graphing applet, needs java, but very easy to add multiple graphs, edit window, add complex functions if need be. Not the same layout for multiple graphs as fooplot, but nice application anyway.

Summer Training Thoughts 3/28/08
Implement the discussion board immediately- model feedback and how to use
Introduce teh wiki immediately as a collection/sharing device, create a new one on wikispaces better tracking data
Quickly immerse them in the virtual environment first assignment conversation about number and fractions that they will ahve with their students adn what that might look like on the internet or virtural environment
Note taking structures must be more intensive and use summarizing/synthesizing and introduce mutliple modalities of taking notes- paper and pencil, wiki, google notebook
Texas Instruments Activities Exchange: Browse by Subject
