Matthew Yglesias » Bush and Rumsfeld Let Osama Escape
-
A new Senate report, thankfully, finally focuses attention on how we failed and why:
“The decision not to deploy American forces to go after Bin Laden or block his escape was made by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and his top commander, General Tommy Franks,” the report says.
“On or around December 16, two days after writing his will, Bin Laden and an entourage of bodyguards walked unmolested out of Tora Bora and disappeared into Pakistan’s unregulated tribal area. Most analysts say he is still there today.”
Rumsfeld’s argument at the time, the report says, was that deploying too many American troops could jeopardize the mission by creating an anti-US backlash among the local populace.
The report dismisses arguments at the time from Franks, Vice President Dick Cheney and others defending the decision and arguing that the intelligence was inconclusive about Bin Laden’s location.
“The review of existing literature, unclassified government records and interviews with central participants underlying this report removes any lingering doubts and makes it clear that Osama bin Laden was within our grasp at Tora Bora.”
Another reminder of the horrible legacy of the George W. Bush administration.
How dare you criticize wasteful defense spending! - Salon.com

- The 2010 Pentagon budget means "every man, woman and child in the United States will spend more than $2,700 on (defense) programs and agencies next year," reports the Cato Institute. "By way of comparison, the average Japanese spends less than $330; the average German about $520; China's per capita spending is less than $100."
- "(The Pentagon budget) dwarfs the combined defense budgets of U.S. allies and potential U.S. enemies alike," reports Hearst Newspapers.
- "President (Obama) is on track to spend more on defense, in real dollars, than any other president has in one term of office since World War II," reports National Journal's Government Executive magazine.
- In 2000, the Pentagon admitted it has lost -- yes, lost -- $2.3 trillion. In 2003, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that a subsequent Department of Defense study said it was only $1 trillion. To put such numbers in perspective, contemplate what those sums could finance. $1 trillion, for instance, could pay the total cost of universal healthcare for the long haul. $2.3 trillion would cover universal healthcare plus the bank bailout plus the stimulus package.

Sen. John McCain and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. After all, they’re the ones who issued those scathing statements about wasteful defense spending in the pop quiz above. That means they’re actually terrorist-appeasing lefties, right?

Rumsfeld: Well, the Office of Management and Budget, has come up
come up with a number that's something under $50 billion for the cost.
How much of that would be the U.S. burden, and how much would be other
countries, is an open question. I think the way to put it into
perspective is that the estimates as to what September 11th cost the
United States of America ranges high up into the hundreds of billions
of dollars. Now, another event in the United States that was like
September 11th, and which cost thousands of lives, but one that
involved a -- for example, a biological weapon, would be -- have a cost
in human life, as well as in billions, hundreds of billions of dollars,
that would be vastly greater," - January 19, 2003.

personally approved by Secretary
of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in October 2003 -
"information
intended for foreign audiences, including public diplomacy and
PSYOP, increasingly is consumed by our domestic audience and vice-versa,"
but argues that "the distinction between foreign and domestic
audiences becomes more a question of USG [U.S. government] intent
rather than information dissemination practices." - 9 more annotations...

I wonder what's worse: a defense secretary who puts Old Testament quotes on progress updates on an invasion of a Muslim country or a defense secretary who thinks this will add to his president's knowledge and expertise.

Did you know that Iran is one of the largest aid donors to our allies in the government of Afghanistan? That it builds roads and other development projects there? That way back in 2002, after the U.S. overthrew the Taliban, it pledged $500 million for Afghan redevelopment -- compared to just $390 million from the U.S.?
