Against The Clash - The Daily Dish | By Andrew Sullivan

  • Osama's favorite label for U.S. and western forces is "crusaders."
Obama pointedly puts the European Crusaders of old on the same side of
the ledger as Islamic extremists.  No holy war can ever be a just war.  One rule lies at the heart of all religions.  Obama is simultaneously taking on the militant understanding of jihad and denying any fundamental clash of civilizations. Mullahs of the world, mull that.

Flight 297 Passenger: Tedd Petruna Is 'Living In A Fantasy World' | TPMMuckraker

  • A security consultant who was a passenger on AirTran Flight 297 says the man who claims he thwarted porn-watching Muslim hijackers clearly fabricated the story, but Brent Brown adds that the airline's version of events underplays the seriousness of what happened.
  • But Brown, whose firm is based in Atlanta, also said that AirTran's explanation of what happened doesn't tell the whole story. He said a group of passengers -- "of obvious Middle Eastern descent, which doesn't concern me" -- were refusing to cooperate with flight attendants and using cell phones while the plane was on the runway. The atmosphere was "extremely tense," and the crew was upset, according to Brown.

Project Syndicate - Inside Thailand’s Hidden War

  • Thailand’s former prime minister, Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, recently ignited a furor when he proposed that the separatist campaign in his country’s Muslim-majority southern provinces might be solved politically, with a form of self-rule. Thailand’s ruling Democrat Party immediately called Chavalit’s remarks “traitorous.”
  • Armed mainly with machetes and kitchen knives, 106 attackers perished that day, 32 of them inside Pattani’s historic Krue-Ze mosque, where they had taken refuge. Five members of the Thai security forces were also killed.

Informed Comment: Swiss Islamophobia Betrays Enlightenment Ideals

  • This campaign poster was banned for being racist, but apparently the goal of the poster, now that is all right.

Look Out, North Carolina | Talking Points Memo

  • You couldn't make this up in a million years. As part of his one-man effort to combat the looming Islamo-imperial threat from the likes of the Muslim Brotherhood, Dave Gaubatz, author of Muslim Mafia, is planning a one-month "investigative counterterrorism project in the Sunni mosques of North Carolina," as our Justin Elliott aptly puts it.

Islam is now overwhelmingly Asian, not Arab (Thomas P.M. Barnett :: Weblog)

  • New census says 1.57B Muslims in the world, or about 23% of the world population
  • Here's the kicker: only 2/3rds of Muslims are Asians, meaning substantially less than 1/3 are Middle East/North African or Arab (think of all the Muslims in the rest of the world).

Malkin Award Nominee - The Daily Dish | By Andrew Sullivan

  • "Of course, most U.S. Muslims don't shoot up their fellow soldiers. Fine. As soon as Muslims give us a foolproof way to identify their jihadis from their moderates, we'll go back to allowing them to serve. You tell us who the ones are that we have to worry about, prove you're right, and Muslims can once again serve. Until that day comes, we simply cannot afford the risk. You invent a jihadi-detector that works every time it's used, and we'll welcome you back with open arms. This is not Islamophobia, it is Islamo-realism," - Director of Issues Analysis, Bryan Fischer, at the American Family Association.

"Peas In A Jihad-Inspired Pod" - The Daily Dish | By Andrew Sullivan

  • That's Michelle Malkin's broad brush. And that kind of rhetoric can have consequences:

Marine reservist Jasen Bruce was getting clothes out of
the trunk of his car Monday evening when a bearded man in a robe
    approached him.

That man, a Greek Orthodox priest named Father Alexios Marakis,
speaks little English and was lost, police said. He wanted directions.

What the priest got instead, police say, was a tire iron to the
head. Then he was chased for three blocks and pinned to the ground — as
the Marine kept a 911 operator on the phone, saying he had captured a
    terrorist.

    And here's a classic moment:

When officers arrived, police say, Bruce told them he heard the man say “Allahu Akbar” – Arabic for “God is great.” “That’s what they say before they blow you up,” Bruce said, according to police.

But this too is worth noting:

McElroy said Bruce "teared up when we told him that (Marakis) was a Greek Orthodox priest and not a terrorist."

Casey vs. Lieberman on Ft. Hood Massacre | The Cable

  • rmy Chief of Staff George Casey
took to the airwaves Sunday to warn the public not to overemphasize
unconfirmed reports about anti-American and religious statements
allegedly made by alleged Fort Hood gunman Major Nidal Hasan.
  • Meanwhile, Senator Joseph Lieberman, I-CT, was on Fox news talking all about Hasan's motivations and warning that the attack could be a new model of terrorism on U.S. soil.

    "It's
clear that he was, one, under personal stress and, two, if the reports
that we're receiving of various statements he made, acts he took, are
valid, he had turned to Islamist extremism," Lieberman said, "And
therefore, if that is true, the murder of these 13 people was a
terrorist act and, in fact, it was the most destructive terrorist act
to be committed on American soil since 9/11."

Matthew Yglesias » Does The Media Give Islam A Pass?

  • Jeffrey Goldberg spies a double-standard:
  • Really? I don’t recall George Tiller’s killing—or Eric Rudolf’s before him—as having touched-off some kind of widespread social or intellectual attack on American Christianity. Indeed, the United States Conference of Bishops responded to the Tiller murder in a manner that, had it been used by CAIR, would have prompted cries of moral equivalence:

“Our bishops’ conference and all its members have repeatedly and publicly denounced all forms of violence in our society, including abortion as well as the misguided resort to violence by anyone opposed to abortion,” Cardinal Rigali said. “Such killing is the opposite of everything we stand for, and everything we want our culture to stand for: respect for the life of each and every human being from its beginning to its natural end. We pray for Dr. Tiller and his family.”

And, I dunno, it is what it is. After all, what are you really supposed to say about religion. After all, not only is the bishops’ statement kind of inadequate, but the central premise of Christian religion (the whole Jesus thing) is—according to me and to Jeff Goldberg too—totally false. Islam too! And yet at the same time we all need to coexist. And fortunately the vast majority of people professing every faith, along with the vast majority of those professing no faith, are rejecting violence and not killing people.

Think Progress » Casey Warns Against Anti-Muslim Backlash: ‘It Would Be A Shame If Our Diversity Became A Casualty’

  • As great a tragedy as this was, it would be a shame if our diversity became a casualty as well. [...] I worry that again that speculation could cause things that we don’t want to see happen.
  • For example, the hosts of Fox & Friends suggested that “special debriefings” and “special screenings” of Muslim soldiers should be considered. Also, Allen West — a Republican congressional candidate and Iraq war vet — used the murders to claim the “enemy is infiltrating our military.”

Interview: Man Who Went Undercover As Muslim Intern Speaks To TPM | TPMMuckraker

  • Here's the full interview (edited for clarity):
  • A: They were nice people and I got along with them very well which is why I was able to retrieve the information I did, but just because somebody is outwardly friendly doesn't mean they can't be doing something wrong or even harming National Security.
