The Anti-Liberty Conservative - The Daily Dish | By Andrew Sullivan

  • Kathleen Parker uncritically quotes Rick Santorum calling himself a "limited government" conservative.

  • He declared himself against individualism, against libertarianism,
    against “this whole idea of personal autonomy, . . . this idea that
    people should be left alone.” Andrew Sullivan [in 2006] directed our attention
    to a television interview in which the senator from the home state of
    Benjamin Franklin and James Wilson denounced America’s Founding idea of
    “the pursuit of happiness.” If you watch the video, you can hear these
    classic hits: “This is the mantra of the left: I have a right to do
    what I want to do” and “We have a whole culture that is focused on
    immediate gratification and the pursuit of happiness . . . and it is
    harming America.”



    Parker says that Santorum is “sometimes referred to as the
    conscience of Senate Republicans.” Really? By whom? Surely not by
    Reaganites, or by people who believe in limited government.

How Egypt thwarts USAID | FP Passport

  • It is the job of USAID to distribute a portion of that money to democracy promotion programs. A recent audit offers a depressing verdict on USAID's efforts: the impact of its programs was "unnoticeable" in improving Egypt's democratic environment.  Of the programs for which USAID distributed funds, donors carried out only 65% of the activities promised and achieved only 52% of the planned results, based on predetermined metrics.

The Far-Eastern Sweet Potato

  • Freedom of speech, expression and assembly were seriously undermined, with individuals arrested for displaying the national and Tibet flag or other symbols of nationhood.

    Among a long list of state-sponsored infractions, a music store in downtown Taipei was forced to close its doors for playing Taiwanese music. On Nov. 4, a 34-year-old woman was injured when police pried a Tibetan flag from her hands before arresting her and two other women for “assembling” close to Taipei Grand Hotel, where Chen was staying. On Nov. 5, a French national was taken away by police for shouting “Taiwan is not part of China.”
  • There have also been reports of police violence against the media — even when journalists were within designated press areas, which on some occasions were changed without prior notice — and a documentary filmmaker was taken away by law enforcement authorities for filming Chen’s car at Taipei Grand Hotel. A photojournalist affiliated with Central News Agency (CNA) was reportedly dragged away by police at Taipei Grand Hotel.
