The $2 Trillion Man | Foreign Policy
-
Yet in one sense, Obama achieved more in the first 11
months of his presidency than his predecessor managed to in eight years. My
research clearly shows that he has begun to restore America's good name, an intangible
asset with highly tangible (read: lucrative) consequences. As head of state,
Obama has boosted the value of "Brand America" by just over $2
trillion, up from $9.7 trillion in 2008 to $11.8 trillion this year. That means
U.S. goods, services, people, and even the country's landscape are about 20
percent more enticing to the global market than they were in 2008. -

How Americans See The World - The Daily Dish | By Andrew Sullivan

Only 16% of the public has a favorable
view of Pakistan, our essential partner in the new AfPak strategy --
barely more than have a favorable view of Iran (11%) -- and unfavorable
views of Pakistan have gone from 39% to 68% since last year. Yikes.
And the partisan gap on Israel is interesting, if not new: in the
general public, 68% of Republicans and 43% of Democrats say that they
sympathize with Israel more than with the Palestinians. Among [Council on Foreign Relations]
experts, a solid 41% plurality say that they sympathize with both
Israel and the Palestinians equally.
On Obama, survey shows yawning gap between foreign-policy elite and general public | The Cable

Are you a fan of Barack
Obama's handling of major foreign-policy issues so far? If so, there's a
greater chance that you are a member of the Council on Foreign Relations than a
member of the general public. -
On issues ranging from terrorism to climate change, Iran, Iraq, China, Guantánamo,
even immigration, CFR members surveyed overwhelmingly approved of the
president's actions so far. Joe Sixpack? Not so much. - 1 more annotations...
Rush Limbaugh - Salon.com
-
By a wide margin, Americans consider Rush Limbaugh the nation's most influential conservative voice.
-
The radio host was picked by 26 percent of those who responded, followed by Fox News Channel's Glenn Beck at 11 percent. Actual politicians -- former Vice President Dick Cheney and former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin -- were the choice of 10 percent each.

The Revival Of Fiscal Conservatism - The Daily Dish | By Andrew Sullivan
-
The GOP is a party that has become increasingly conservative,
particularly on fiscal issues. Obama's stimulus package of nearly $800
billion, bailouts for banks and the auto industry, and a health-care
bill with a price tag of nearly $900 billion over 10 years have aroused
strong opposition on the right.Almost three-quarters of Republicans and GOP-leaners identify
themselves as "conservative" on most issues, up sharply from a couple
of years ago... On fiscal issues, the percentage calling themselves conservative has
soared to more than eight in 10. More striking is that a majority
considers themselves to be "very conservative" on fiscal issues, up
about 20 points in two years. -
The better news is that Republican voters understand that the GOP is also responsible for the fiscal mess:
Just 1 percent pick George W. Bush as the best reflection of the
party's principles, and only a single person in the poll cites former
vice president Richard B. Cheney. About seven in 10 say Bush bears at
least "some" of the blame for the party's problems. - 2 more annotations...
Daily brief: Clinton in Kabul for Karzai's inauguration | The AfPak Channel
-
Whether
Karzai will appoint reformers or stack his cabinet with political
friends remains an open question that worries Afghan and international
observers alike (AFP, Independent). -
U.S. officials have reportedly given Karzai a list of 40 people it
considers "clean enough" to participate in his new cabinet.
Presumably
not included on the "clean enough" list is the president's half-brother
Ahmed Wali Karzai, who has become a "symbol of cronyism and a lightning
rod for criticism of all that is wrong with Karzai's administration" (AP). Alexandra Zavis has a must-read on the plague of corruption in Afghanistan (Los Angeles Times). - 4 more annotations...

CNN Poll: Majority Of Southerners Says Obama Has Done Better Job Than Bush | The Plum Line
-
the internals show that a majority of southerners thinks Obama has done a better job than native son Bush:
Fifty-seven percent say Obama has been a better president than George W. Bush; only a third say Bush’s track record was better.
“Compared to Obama, Bush does fairly well among southerners and rural voters. But even in those categories, a majority still says Obama has done a better job than Bush,” says Holland.

This despite the fact that the PCCC's Research 2000 Nevada poll just last week showed that the public option enjoys 54 to 39% support in Nevada -- 55% to 39% among Independents.
He also said Blanche Lincoln could lose re-election over the public option. What??
Back to Research 2000: The public option enjoys 55% to 38% approval in Arkansas -- 56% to 34% among Independents.
