If you need to convert AVI files to MOV (i.e. something authorable in Final Cut or iMovie), you can use MPEG Streamclip from Squared5. -- Rick Cogley

An excellent article on software platforms, by Michael Mace. -- Rick Cogley |
From the article:
Intuit and Stanford recently asked me to give talks on computer platforms and what makes them successful. (By platforms I mean software with APIs that third party developers can write apps on top of; Windows and Macintosh are both platforms, as is Java.) Platforms are a hot topic in Silicon Valley these days. The success of the iPhone app store in mobile, and Facebook on the web, have forcefully reminded people that you can grow a tech business more quickly if you get third party developers to help you. Almost every tech company I work with is trying to expose some sort of API or platform offering in its products.
WOW, this is a cool tool. Circos is designed with genome data in mind but can be used for visualization of any data sets. --Rick Cogley
From the site: Circos is designed for visualizing genomic data such as alignments, conservation, and generalized 2D data, such as line, scatter, heatmap and histogram plots. Circos is very flexible — you can use it to visualize any kind of data, not just genomics. Circos has been used to visualize customer flow in the auto industry, volume of courier shipments, database schemas, and presidential debates.
The creation of Circos was motivated by a need to visualize intra- and inter-chromosomal relationships within one or more genomes, or between any two or more sets of objects with a corresponding distance scale. Circos is similar to chromowheel and, to a lesser extent, genopix.

This is a Twitter app built in Adobe AIR, and is very good. Can't search in Japanese (or I bet other multi-byte languages), can't block users. I think Twhirl beats this in several respects.
From the site - "TweetDeck enables users to split their main feed (All Tweets) into topic or group specific columns allowing a broader overview of tweets. The default columns can contain All Tweets from your timeline, @replies directed to you and direct messages. The GROUP, SEARCH and REPLIES buttons then allow the user to make up additional columns populated from the live tweet information. Once created these additional columns will automatically update allowing the user to keep track of a twitter threads far easier."
Adobe AIR-based Twitter Client Twhirl is awesome. Cross platform.
From the twhirl website: "twhirl is a social software desktop client, based on the Adobe AIR platform.
Some of twhirl’s features:
* runs on both Windows (2000/XP/Vista) and Mac OSX
* connects to multiple Twitter, laconi.ca, Friendfeed and seesmic accounts
* notifications on new messages
* shorten long URLs (using snurl, twurl or is.gd)
* cross-post twitter updates to Pownce and Jaiku
* post images to TwitPic
* search tweets using Twitter Search and TweetScan
* timeline filtering
* color schemes
* automatically check for new versions"

I love this app. It makes such a pleasing zap sound when zapping an app, and it works well, too. You need this if you trial software a lot, and end up uninstalling. From the App Zapper site - "Introducing AppZapper. AppZapper is for people who want to confidently try new apps while knowing they can uninstall them easily. Drag one or more unwanted apps onto AppZapper and watch as it finds all the extra files and lets you delete them with a single click. A slick safety system remembers which apps you want to keep safe, and the log tracks all the files you've zapped. In one Zap you'll understand it. In two you'll fall in love. Within the five free Zaps, you'll know you need to add AppZapper to your arsenal. Go ahead — try five free zaps and see AppZapper, the Mac uninstaller for the rest of us, in action. "
