As I'm a little more than a month out from the semester's end, I've been reflecting on different aspects of the semester: things that worked well, things that didn't work at all, and things that could be tweaked for the future. In particular, I've been musing on how I integrated social media into my classes.
When Google Wave first burst on the scene in 2009, little information was available to learn how to use this tool. Now, tutorials, resources and tips abound, but a reader must wade through the maze of information to find appropriate tools for teachers and students. The integration of technology into an English graduate seminar classroom, in other words, poses questions about how we're training the next group of scholars, about our pedagogy, and about how we've done things for the last X-number of years. One of the most interesting Waves currently on-going is titled Uses of Google Wave in the Classroom, it was started by Stuart Ridout and I really encourage you to give it a read and join the discussion if you're a student, educator or just generally interested and opinionated.
Joining such powerful critics of the social media revolution as Oxford neuroscientist Baroness Lady Susan Greenfield, Archbishop Nichols noted the “transiency” and dehumanisation of social life on community networks like Facebook and Twitter.
