Cybernetics developed during World War Two, saying that what is most important about us as humans is our ability to send messages, and to respond to feedback from those messages. The focus now is on how we think about identity.
The way people search is prone to rapid twists and turns. It seems to short circuit the decision-making cycle, allowing the user to think with greater agility. The way we dart through information may indicate that we want to read differently.

- When we look at what Harkin calls ‘Cyburbia’ today it is nowhere near a global brain, though it might look like a vast ‘electronic unconscious, or id’, which tends to short circuit our rational thoughts in favor of half-baked intentions, impulses.
- Q. With the power of these new tools, how do you avoid consolidation of power for the already-powerful? How do you let the potential for the Internet not end up there, but end up with democratic future?
- Information is NOT power. Power is power. We have lost our ability to understand how power works, and we should not be seduced by the idea that world is constructed by electronic information.

At first, the real-time nature of Google Wave makes it tempting to use it like instant messaging but you find yourself talking over each other. It seems better suited to real-time collaboration, with different people editing different parts of a Wave similar to a Wikipedia entry. It's perfect for holding asynchronous conversations that run over days, similar to online forums. Anyone who has used clunky and expensive business-grade collaboration and project management tools will see the potential for Google Wave.
