Mad cow disease kills mother and son
-
MADRID, Spain (CNN) -- The mother of a Spanish man who died from the human form of mad cow disease has also died from the illness, Spain's Ministry of Health says.
-
It is believed to be the first case in the world where two members of the same family have died from mad cow disease, said Juan Jose Badiola, director of Spain's national research center for mad cow disease.
"It's noteworthy that there's a double case in the same family," Badiola said.
Until now, Badiola added, clinical evidence that he's seen from the United Kingdom and France -- which have had the most deaths due to the human form of mad cow disease -- had not recorded two cases in a single family.
-
The latest confirmed case makes a total of four deaths in Spain from mad cow disease since 2005.
-
Ten years can pass between eating contaminated tissue and the appearance of the human form of the disease, called variant Creutzfeldt Jakob disease, health officials say.
-
The other case in that province was of a woman, 50, who was a local government worker in the provincial capital. She died in December from mad cow disease.
The first confirmed death from mad cow disease in Spain was in 2005, when a young woman died near Madrid.
In addition to the cases in Spain, as of June the following numbers of cases of human mad cow disease had been reported: 167 in the United Kingdom; 23 in France; four in Ireland; three in the United States; two each in Netherlands and Portugal; and one each in Canada, Italy, Japan and Saudi Arabia
Two of the three U.S. cases, two of the four cases in Ireland and the single cases in Canada and Japan were people probably exposed to the mad cow agent while residing in the United Kingdom, officials have said. One of the 23 French cases may also have been infected in the United Kingdom.

A peregrine falcon couple nesting atop the WaMu building in downtown Seattle lost its entire brood over the past few days, according to a group monitoring the raptors.
-
The deaths are "an unusual event," the Skagit County-based Falcon Research Group said in its blog. "We have not seen this type of mortality among peregrines breeding in Seattle or elsewhere for that matter."
-
Bud Anderson, a member of the Falcon Research Group, said young chicks sometimes die in the first day or two after hatching because they haven't been able to stay warm enough, or because they pick up frounce, a highly contagious parasite, from pigeons.
But "we have never seen a sequential die-off" of chicks in midstage development, he said.
"We thought it was unusual enough to talk to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife," he added.
The cause of death remains unknown, Anderson said.

Why are those who claim the name of Jesus stating that their favorite TV shows are shows like "Friends" and "Greys Anatomy" and "The Simpsons"? The content of these shows are blatantly in opposition to what we are told, in Scripture, to put into our minds.
-
Can a person REALLY have a relationship with God, be led by His Spirit, and glorify God, and sit in front of such immorality at the same time? Are we saturating our minds with Scripture? Could we invite Jesus over to our homes tonight, for an evening of watching TV? Would we want Him here? What does GOD'S WORD say about what we are supposed to be putting into our mind?
-
Purity begins in the mind.
-
most popular TV shows among Christian young people promote and and endorse homosexuality, adulterous affairs, and premarital sex
-
believers have no business taking in any of this content, for it is in direct opposition to God and His standard. If you watch the news, go through a grocery line, or just look around you, you will have a pretty good idea as to what is going on in this world.

Psalm 97:10 "O YOU WHO LOVE THE LORD, HATE EVIL..."

DOES THAT MEAN I MUST SHUN ALL IMMORALITY...
ICorinthians 6:18 "SHUN IMMORALITY and all sexual looseness (flee from impurity in thought, word, or deed!)..." -
Psalms 101:3 "I will put NOTHING wicked before my eyes. I hate the works of those who turn away.

Philippians 4:8 "Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy-meditate on these things."

We are supposed to be different! The world will not be drawn to Christ because we have made ourselves relevant. They will be drawn to Him because His spirit will draw them, and He will use us as we live out our lives before Him in a holy manner, set apart, and glorifying HIM.

Wave of swallow deaths sparks mystery

The recent deaths of nearly 100 cliff swallows near the public dock at Lower Otay Lake – plus five deaths reported yesterday at El Capitan Reservoir – have created a stink and prompted an investigation by the county veterinarian.
-
“I wouldn't say this is normal to see a colony like that experience such a high number of losses,” said Nikos Gurfield, the county vet.
-
The problems appear to have started about a week ago, when the reek of decaying birds at the Lower Otay dock and boathouse caught the attention of the city's lake manager. Swallow deaths have continued for several days, prompting reservoir employees to knock down nests that have dead swallows.
“There are a few that are surviving, but most of the birds . . . and the babies are dying,” said Nelson Manville, supervisor of the lakes program for San Diego. “They have had a horrendous smell.”
Yesterday morning, he learned from employees at El Capitan Reservoir that they were seeing similar problems. El Capitan, the largest lake in the city system, is about 30 miles northeast of downtown San Diego.
On Thursday, news reports circulated about the deaths of roughly 100 swallows at Rim of the World High School in Lake Arrowhead. San Bernardino County health officials said they suspected the birds were poisoned, but similarities between the Arrowhead and San Diego incidents are raising questions about whether there's a broader factor at work.
“Any time you have these large number of die-offs, it's concerning,” said Jane Hendron, spokeswoman for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Carlsbad.

The Energetic Contamination of Beef Products (Transcript)
-
Look at things from a different point of view. Why not eat a horse? They say, "Well, that would be cruel," but eating a cow is not cruel. They say, "Yes, that is fine." The only reason that they can say that and, by the way, if you eat cows this is undoubtedly true for you -- the only reason you can say that is that you have never been to a slaughterhouse. You have never actually met your meat, so to speak. You have never seen what really happens back there. If you did, you would give it up immediately.
-
There is no way that a conscious, compassionate, and intelligent human being can observe what happens in a slaughterhouse and continue to eat that meat. The only way that humans can consume beef and pork products today is because they are able to disassociate from the animal. They do not even call cow meat – "cow meat." They just call it beef.
This is a completely different word. Pig products, of course, are not called pig. They are called pork. They are reshaped into different, isolated food names that further distances the food item from the animal from which it came. For example, they call it sausage or bacon. If you say the word bacon, it does not bring to mind or does not invoke an animal. Bacon, in the minds of most consumers, is something all by itself. It is completely isolated from its source.
When people talk about bacon, they say: "Let us cook up some bacon for breakfast." They do not say "Let us eat pig flesh," even though that would be the more accurate statement. Language reflects thought and ideas. Through their language, they distance themselves from the reality of where that meat comes from. -
Well if you go to Google and search around for organ transplant recipients, you will find many recipients who actually experience the emotions of their organ donors. They are recipients of heart transplants and liver transplants, for example. They actually experience the memories of the donor who has long since passed away, obviously.
They experience the memories and the moods. They sometimes have flashbacks from the other person. Modern medical science tends to dismiss these reports because they do not understand them. It does not fit the model of what they understand to be true. They just say, "You are just imagining things." In reality, many people experience this.
It is because the tissues themselves -- the organs -- actually store energy. They store vibration. They store emotions. When you take a heart out of one person and put it into another person, you begin to unleash the emotional energy that was in the original heart organ. That is why the recipient then begins to experience those emotions all over again.
This is also, by the way, why there are so many emotions tied to the heart. What is Valentine's Day? The symbol is the heart. The heart stands for love. It is because love can actually be stored energetically inside the physical organ. It is an energetic vibration but it is imprinted in the tissues. That is why we say things like "I am saying this from my heart."
Many English idioms and sayings use the heart to express emotion. Well, this is no coincidence. It is because throughout human civilization, observers have consistently noted that the heart is one source of emotional energy. The truth is all the tissues and organs in your body also store emotional energy -- your liver, your skin, your muscles and flesh.
Even your blood stores emotional energy. You can see this if you look back at certain ancient civilizations like here in South America -- Mayan and Incan cultures and the Aztec north of here. There are also American Indian cultures that also believe this. Many of these cultures believed in consuming the organs of animals they killed for certain reasons -- to give themselves the spirit of that animal, for example.
This, again, was not superstition. This has a very valid basis in reality. When you eat the flesh of another animal or another being, you begin to assimilate that same emotional energy. -
You see it in organ transplants. You have seen it throughout human history. You see it in modern use of language. We know that energy is stored in organs and when you eat those organs or the flesh of other animals, you will assimilate whatever energies and emotions that were imprinted in those tissues.

instead of turning girls into sexual objects, society should teach them to "be resilient and to defend their dignity and self-respect."
-
The problem of the premature sexualizing of girls is one of the most serious issues confronting us as a society at the present time. Girls are being turned into sexual objects earlier and earlier.
The messages they receive through popular culture is that to be attractive, to be accepted, you have to dress and behave in a sexual manner. There are now lingerie clothing lines for preteen girls, and bras for girls under 10, T-shirts with sexual slogans, and even a pole dancing kit complete with a DVD that features "sexy dance tracks" for 6-year-olds.
Popular lines of dolls for girls feature sexy clothing and sexy personas. Gossip magazines aimed at a preteen readership also encourage girls to behave in a sexual manner, with pages devoted to grooming and relationships -- even with older men.
In advertising catalogues, children are dressed up, made-up and posed in the same way that adults are. This suggests that children are interested in, and perhaps open to, approaches for sex.
Young girls are not emotionally equipped to process the sexual messages being targeted at them. It is difficult for them, when abandoned to their autonomy, to resist outside pressure. We are seeing the effects of this premature sexualizing on the bodies of our young women in self-destructive behaviors such as excessive dieting and eating disorders, drug taking and binge drinking, self harm, anxiety, depression, lower academic performance and ill health.
Prescriptions for drugs to treat depression in young girls increase every year. Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia are at epidemic proportions -- and manifesting in children as young as 8. -
Many gains have been made by the women's movement, that needs to be acknowledged. But at some stage, efforts to end the exploitation of women were overtaken by the movement for sexual liberalism.
Suddenly, women's freedom was reduced to women's freedom to be sexual playthings for male arousal and pleasure. "Liberation" has come to mean a woman's ability to pole dance, expose herself, have multiple partners and avail herself of cosmetic surgery to enhance her "assets."
Sexual liberalism has not advanced women's freedom, but eroded and undermined it. We are living in a sexually brutalized culture. We are seeing more harassment, stalking and rape, more alcohol-fueled sexual abuse and use of date rape drugs. In general, more predatory behaviour. -
The barrage of sexual images in popular culture cannot be justified on "free speech" grounds when it is causing so much damage to vulnerable children who need protection.
Online networks of pedophiles also use "free speech" arguments when trading in images of children being raped. -
The APA study and other research, for example by the Australia Institute and by my organization, Women's Forum Australia, provides solid evidence for the harm being caused by plastering society's wallpaper with sexual images.
What we are witnessing is not liberation but oppression. -
Young women are facing huge pressure to conform to a sexualized norm.
The "norm" is that young women have an insatiable appetite for sex. This is a cultural assumption that women should be having sex -- at least daily -- and something is wrong if they're not. There is profound pressure from the media for young women to be sexually attractive and active. Without this they are thought of as abnormal and unfulfilled. -
The decision not to submit to hypersexualized messages and to live above the dictates of the culture, needs to be seen for what it is -- a radical and defiant alternative lifestyle.
-
We also need to be investing a lot more in raising decent men. There are many men who share the concerns I have raised here. But there are other men -- and it is primarily men -- who create the demand for the sort of material that strips women of dignity and respect. It is mostly men who commit sexual crimes, who traffic millions of women and girls a year into the twin industries of pornography and prostitution. It is mostly men who buy pornography and prostituted women.
Is Prostitution Just Another Job?
-
On Jan. 19 the Times reported on a book recently published in France by a person known only as Laura D, who is 19 years old. She paid for her first year of university studies by working as a prostitute and wrote the book to warn others against following her example.
-
Janice Turner, writing in the Times on Feb. 23, commented that the vast majority of women involved in prostitution wish to escape. She described the legalized brothels in Holland as “magnets for organized crime, drug dealers and traffickers.” Conditions in the legalized centers for prostitution in Nevada are no better, she added, with many women often cruelly treated.
-
“Prostitutes are doing something that is fundamentally dehumanizing in order to accommodate instincts that in a truly ‘better world,’ would be channeled into more fruitful and dignified relationships,”
-
“Selling your body is not a behavior to take pride in, for as we humans are psychologically constructed, a woman’s sense of self-respect is invariably tied up with her sexual behavior,”
-
Matthews, professor of criminology at London South Bank University, points out a number of drawbacks with prostitution and its legalization. Some who favor its decriminalization describe prostitution as a victimless crime, he observes. This, he replies, is a very superficial affirmation.
Those involved in prostitution, especially the women who practice it on public streets, are one of the most highly victimized social groups, Matthews argues. Many of the women involved have long histories of abuse and neglect, and a large number are addicted to drugs. Estimates vary, he observes, but studies carried out in various countries put at 50-90% the proportion of street-based prostitutes who have suffered from child abuse or neglect.
As a group they are also more prone to suffer from homelessness, unemployment and poverty. Their vulnerability and low self-esteem often makes many of these young women open to exploitation by those who groom them for prostitution, Matthews adds.
Contrary to those who portray prostitution as a free choice or as a means of liberation for women, Matthews points out that many of the women do it to support a drug habit or to find money for other pressing needs. He also cited research that put at 10-15% the number of those who are coerced by pimps to prostitute themselves.
The media sometimes presents a glamorized view of prostitution, but according to Matthews: “Behind the facade of independence and autonomy there are a large number of disillusioned women, whose sense of self-worth is continually being eroded.” A problem that becomes more acute as the women age and their looks fade. -
Legalization, combined with taking it off the street, may appear to solve some of the problems associated with prostitution, but is only an attractive option on the surface, one of the book’s chapters explains.
Matthews looks at the experience of the Australian state of Victoria and finds that the legalization of prostitution has not only led to an explosion in the number of brothels, but also to an increase in illegal prostitution. Work conditions for in many cases have not improved and the number of women trafficked has actually increased. Violence against women, another problem associated with prostitution, has likewise increase with legalization.
The same problems occurred in the Netherlands, Matthews commented, which in recent times has led authorities to close down many legal brothels. Turning to Germany, he said that rather than reducing the scale of street prostitution, legalization has instead encouraged its expansion.
With regard to the claim that regular health checks carried out in legalized establishments would be a positive move, Matthews maintained that this does little to improve matters as checks are not carried out on clients. Health checks, he continued, are of limited value and may even lead to a false sense of security.
Those Bawdy Bratz Babes::By Janice Shaw Crouse
-
Little girls don’t get to “mother” their pretend babies any more; instead, they act out today’s young adult values with the more popular “fashion dolls.” Bratz dolls, those ghetto cool, sexualized dolls with skimpy miniskirts, high-heel boots, pouty lips and ‘bad’ attitude, are now the #1 doll in America, having pulled ahead of Barbie as the most popular fashion-doll in the United States. One writer explained that the dolls made little girls “sluts-in-training,” another said they promoted “hooker chic” and another claimed that they promoted “precocious sexuality.”
-
The Bratz babes were singled out by the recent report from the American Psychological Association as one of the worst offenders in sexualizing girls.
-
Bratz has opened a new line called “Baby Bratz.” These dolls are even more controversial than the teen version. Appallingly, the baby version wears a thong instead of a diaper. MGA Entertainment apologized for the “mistake” claiming that there should have been a Pampers on the baby instead. Right! The baby bottle filled with a soft drink, accompanied by a life-sized burp, not-so-subtly pushes sugar-laden soft drinks for infants when childhood obesity is a national epidemic.
-
The rest of us who have common sense and recognize the dangers of sexualizing our children know better. MGA is pushing a bawdy adult sexuality off on children; parents are reporting that some pre-teens will wear only lingerie from Victoria’s Secret.

Feminism has new weaponry, and I’m more than a little surprised. The weapon of mass destruction is oiled-up, half-naked grinding women asking to be ogled and worshipped because of their enticing bits and pieces, otherwise known as “beeps.”
-
I wish I could feign shock that a show so exploitive of young women would be shown on TV. But TV executives aren’t likely to pass on this premise: Hot, scantily-clad girls thrusting their “beeps” at the camera. TV shows are constantly conjuring new ways to have writhing, half-dressed females on screen.
-
McG and the young things vying for a spot in the group can say that the Dolls empower women all they want, but I hope they appreciate the ridiculousness of their assertions.
The lyrics that encourage men to take note of their hotness are, as McG suggested, the “third-wave feminism.” If that’s so, then we can go ahead and send out honorary N.O.W. memberships to Howard Stern and Hugh Hefner.
So feminists now lap dance their way to the top and compete viciously for men? It’s a crude male fantasy, and a female’s nightmare.
Most frightening of all is the prepubescent kids that are undoubtedly watching and absorbing. I cringe to think that these girls would feel empowered by being sexualized. And what about young boys who are given yet another example of a woman’s value?
The Pussycat Dolls frighten me because their claim to power is based only on their appearance and sexuality. Because of this, the only real power the Pussycat Dolls possess is the power to debase women far more effectively than any man.

Randy and Dwight say doctors never encouraged an autopsy after their fathers died.
In the late 1990’s three hunters were reported as suspected victims. One man was from Miami. But those cases were never confirmed.
Deer or elk have tested positive for the disease in 11 states, including Oklahoma. In 1998, a herd of elk in Oklahoma County came down with disease but so far the state hasn't seen the problem with deer.
Experts have never proven people can get CJD by eating infected wild game but they believe it could happen.
The Surveillance Center in Ohio specializes in researching diseases like CJD. The center sends out a letter every year asking doctors to perform autopsies if they suspect CJD.
The center will pay for the autopsy and will even send a pathologist to perform it. But the CJD Foundation says the message is not getting through, even though the tissue samples are critical in the hopes of finding a cure. -
Right now researchers are testing a suspicious tissue sample. It's an autopsy from a Virginia woman who died from CJD in April.
They believe hers could be the first confirmed case of Variant CJD in the U.S. It could take a couple months to complete the testing.

Dwight’s dad, Jimmie Davidson, started complaining about feeling confused. Doctors told his family that Jimmie had Alzheimer’s. “Quite honestly we didn't buy that”, Dwight said.
They too, took him to Saint John. By then, Jimmie was having trouble walking and Dwight watched his dad steadily get worse. “Literally from day to day to day.”
After a series of tests, neurologists diagnosed Dwight’s father with CJD. “You realize your father's personality is just disappearing and nothing anyone could do about it.”
By the time he left the hospital, Jimmie was comatose. He died a few days later, at home.
Dwight and Randy both fear their fathers caught CJD by eating contaminated meat. -
Some experts believe CJD may also come from eating meat from diseased animals like deer and elk. Randy and Dwight say their fathers both ate wild game.
-
Randy and Dwight will never know if contaminated meat killed their fathers. The only way to know is with an autopsy, and they didn't get one.
Doctors say that happens because a lot of pathologists are afraid to perform the autopsies.
Doctor Myers says he ran into that problem. “I had arranged for a biopsy to be sent to Oklahoma City and the neuro-pathologist there refused to accept the specimen.”
Why? Because he was afraid it was CJD and didn't want to get infected.

Tulsa's medical community is asking questions after some concerns a Green Country man may have died of mad cow disease, medically known as Variant CJD.
FOX23 first told you last month that a man was admitted to Saint John Medical Center with a mysterious illness. He died one week later.
After the story first aired, the man’s son called FOX23. It turns out his father was from Kellyville. He says his dad did die of CJD, which is often referred to as the human form of mad cow disease. And he may not be the only victim in that Creek County town.
Even though Dwight Davidson and Randy King both grew up in Kellyville, they didn’t know each other until now. They believe both their fathers contracted the same rare and devastating illness.
Both describe their fathers as tough guys and for them to get sick at all was unusual.
But one day Randy noticed his dad, Donald King, was having trouble remembering things. That's when Randy took his dad to Saint John Medical Center in Tulsa. “They ran every test known to man, just kept coming back good.”
The rapid deterioration of Donald’s mind and body baffled doctors, so they flew him to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.
Specialists there diagnosed Donald with something Randy had never heard of, Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease or CJD. -
Dr. Myers says the disease is difficult to trace because symptoms may not show up for years. “The incubation period is so long, we could have a million people infected right now and wouldn't know it for another decade.”
But once symptoms show up, CJD is a quick killer.
Randy lost his dad just one week later.
The Artfulness of Nude Art
-
For some reason nudity, when presented as art, seems to get a free pass,
-
The argument, I believe, goes "art is 'cultured' and how could anything 'cultured' be bad?" Be even the most artistic, tastefully done nude photograph, while surely a step up from overtly trashy pornography, is still publicized nudity and therefore problematic in my mind.
