What if you have a file that you cannot run? What file is that? You can use a free program called TrID that can scan any files and identify file types from their binary signatures. TrID is better than other file recognizers because it can be trained to know a file type. Currently TrID can recognized over 3000 file type or file extension. - raymondblog on 2008-01-15
