only breaking backs but also axles and wallets.
  • "Because of the bad roads,
traffic moves slowly and we can't keep to scheduled times," says a BEST
official, adding that not only do the jerks and jolts make their older
passengers uncomfortable but also lead to more frequent tyre punctures and

Transportation

This website has a history for Mumbai Transportation

www.macalester.edu/...transportation.html - Preview

  • Transportation in Mumbai is a huge problem, especially due to the geography
of the island. There is a large concentration of all the commercial and
administrative functions on the southern end of the island due to the fact
that the fort was located there and has since developed into a modern Central
    Business District.
  • The number of commuters
using railroads has increased five fold between 1959 and 1989.

Mumbai traffic woes: 'Solution lies in dedicated bus lanes, congestion tax' - Mumbai - Cities - The Times of India

  • The
experts say projects like Bus Rapid Transit System and areaspecific plying
schemes would be more effective. P R K Murthy, Chief of Transport and
Communication wing of MMRDA, said a congestion tax-money collected from
motorists for plying in a congested areawould also help in lowering the vehicle
density within the city thus restricting frequent traffic snarls.
  • Restricting
parking on arterial roads, car pooling and increasing buses through dedicated
bus lanes are the three effective measures to lessen vehicle density, said
expert Ashok Datar. He said imposing conditions on car occupancy, which is an
average 1.8 persons per car in Mumbai, is also possible.

  • Traffic, construction activities and fire-crackers during festivities top the
    list of polluters in the
    city.
  • According to activists,

musical and multi-toned horns add to the cacophony on the streets, even in
silent zones where honking is banned, including localities near hospitals,
schools and courts. Noise from motors and exhaust system of vehicles are other
high-level sounds created on city roads.
