Unbelievable. Curious if the outburst of online outrage manages to achieve anything.

  • It turns out that CIQ is not exactly what many people don’t see (as it is hidden), but it is rather a very useful tool for system and network administrators. The tools is used to provide feedback and relevant data on several metrics that can help one of the aforementioned admins to troubleshoot and improve system and network performance. Point and case, the app seems to run in such a way that it allows the user to provide the input needed via surveys and other things. To put things in a more visual way, this is what CIQ should look like
  • In the original version of the app, the app is set to collect things such as network status, equipment ID and manufacturer, and much more. All this data is then pushed to a “portal” where the administrator can see, filter, accommodate, and virtually arrange all the metrics reported by the app in any way he/she sees fit. What is more, according to some of the training documents, CIQ can virtually consider anything as a metric, and record it.

  • So regardless how David Leigh & Co. imagine computer security works—and right now they are desperately trying increasingly ridiculous arguments to blame Wikileaks for Leigh's actions—there's no reason to publish any password this sensitive—ever.

The entire Leigh/Harding Wikileaks book is written in the thrilled tone of a girl scout's diary, clearly reveling in the secret squirrel aspect of the story. And they're clearly clueless too. Leigh at one point drives across town so Assange can show him how to unzip the Cablegate file. Perhaps not the best people to share secrets with.

  • As usual, many of those running around righteously condemning WikiLeaks for the potential, prospective, unintentional harm to innocents caused by this leak will have nothing to say about these actual, deliberate acts of wanton slaughter by the U.S.  The accidental release of these unredacted cables will receive far more attention and more outrage than the extreme, deliberate wrongdoing these cables expose.
  • Regardless of who is at fault -- more on that in a minute -- WikiLeaks, due to insufficient security measures, failed to fulfill that duty here.  There's just no getting around that

patents are there to stop new entrants, not to protect innovation

patents ubuntu intellectual property FAIL information secrets open source

  • The patent system is often misunderstood. It’s sold as a way of giving the little guy an opportunity to create something big … when in fact patents don’t really work that way at all.

What they do very well is keep the big guys entrenched and the little guys out. For example, it’s very common in established industries for all of the majors to buy up or file as many patents as they can covering a particular area. They know and accept that the other majors are all in the same industry and essentially cross-license each other to keep the peace within that defined market. But they use that arsenal to stop new entrants coming in and disrupting the market.

  • Patents were essentially a trade for disclosure of an idea that created a good for society in exchange for a short-term monopoly.

Interesting. In my experience (limited to talking to vendors I used Groupon voucher for myself) the upselling is rare, though not impossible. It varies from products/services offered. Some are pure loss as they attract mainly deal-hoppers who are not interested in sticking with the vendor. My opinion is that this can't last, so getting a few deals out of it to try out things I wouldn't normally pay full price for. If that's not a broken model, I don't know what is...
