2¢ Worth » What about Integrating?

  • Diane Quirk, of “Technology to Empower Student Learning,” posted a comment on one of my rants about the mantra, “Integrate Technology.” I described how I was much happier with integrating contemporary literacy. But Quirk suggests in her comment that perhaps we should reconsider at integrate as well.

My initial response was that there may be some merit to this, but probably not enough to shake things up any more. However, I continued to think about it, and after reading her subsequent blog posting on the subject, decided that perhaps Diane is right.

Students tap into technology - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

  • Sunday, February 22, 2009
    • Read this article twice then had to go back and check on the date. All those laptops and interactive whiteboards and other gee whiz tools are great but what about the teacher training? How much money is being invested in teaching best practices? - on 2009-02-25

Weblogg-ed » The Netbook Effect

  • And, at the same time, cementing the idea of cloud computing in our lives.
    • Shortly after I began to explore all the tools that the web provides (probably two years ago), the first conclusion that I came to was that the day would come when everything we do now on a desktop computer will be done on the web. Netbooks make this really easy - the portabiility alone makes it so much better. - on 2009-02-20

  • Better yet, should I go with like seven of them (or more) which is about many I could buy for the same cost as my Mac. Don’t get me wrong, I love my Mac
    • I know Apple has its iPhone but I have to believe that they're working on some sort of Netbook or some sort of sub-notebook. And yes...the cost will probably be higher than other Windows based computers, but I'd buy a Mac first any day. - on 2009-02-20

2¢ Worth » A More Interesting Conference than I’d Expected

  • Most of the research on the impact of technology in education, that he shared indicated little to no impact — until he got to recent studies done by Becta in the U.K. where enormous investment has been made in technology.  What has accompanied that investment are efforts to redefine and retool education to reflect 21 century realities.  They found dramatic advancement in learning, when that investment was accompanied with enthusiasm and support.
    • This part of the post about Keith Kruger's presentation has some really important points. How much do school districts invest in making sure that their administrators understand how to support technology in the classrooms? What kinds of professional development are given to administrators to make sure they know how to do more than type a letter and send out email? - on 2009-02-20

The Fischbowl: WWSD: What Would Shakespeare Do?

  • After a few presentations today, we debriefed after each one discussing did their presentation merely distribute information or did they go above and beyond the expectations to really show WWSD?
    • This IS the point...a formative assessment, an authentic assessment is NOT about just distributing the information you just learned. It's about getting inside the information to the point that you can bring something new out of that information. - on 2008-10-04

  • News is time-sensitive. Knowledge isn't.
  • to keep this in mind, it's not the design that one has to think of as in "what does my front page look like", it's the information architecture, especially the implementation of taxonomies, that really makes a difference in creating multiple participation planes and points of entry in a blog.
