An article from Fordham about math that is just, well...superb.

Hi all.
I saw this quote today and thought of you:
“When students see a list of problems, all of the same kind, they know the strategy to use before they even read the problem. That’s like riding a bike with training wheels.” -- Doug Rohrer
This underscores the idea that it's more important to teach students how to think than it is to teach them how to react autonomically -- without thinking.

This article from Education Week on cognitively guided instruction (CGI) may prove interesting and helpful in gaining a deeper understanding of what we're trying to do with the kids in math. (We read an book last year with the SLT on CGI but it's really for pedagogues.)
We're also planning on a parent workshop with our Math Staff Developer, Stephanie Slabic, on Wednesday morning, December 1st, at 9:00 in the Library. I'm hoping many of you will join us.
This is a pretty straight-ahead look at what some educators are trying to do and includes a couple of comments about how parents are sometimes confused by the approach. I'd be curious to know your thoughts.
All best -
Donna

Interesting article in the NYT regarding the teaching of Math.
We've introduced a new tool to the children in December, a manipulative developed by Adrian Treffers called the rekenrek. It's a counting frame that encourages automaticiity in addition and s
"New research makes the case for hard tests, and suggests an unusual technique that anyone can use to learn."
Kyra recommeded this article from the NYT, in the event you missed it. "Schools around the country have been planting gardens and planning ever more elaborate field trips in hopes of reconnecting children with nature."
Feature story on the opening of Brooklyn School of Inquiry in the New York Times.
Add your text, and it builds a word cloud for you. Good for Copy/Paste activity for kids.
